A 72-year-old man was killed in a weekend hit-and-run on Interstate 59/20 in Birmingham.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the fatality victim as James Edward Laffitte. He lived in Birmingham.

The wreck happened at 7:51 p.m. Saturday on I-59/20 at the I-65 exit.

Authorities said Laffitte was driving a Buick Lesabre that was struck in the rear by a Toyota Corolla.

Laffitte was taken to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:23 p.m.

The driver of the Toyota fled the scene but was later taken into custody by police. No suspect information has yet been released.
