70-year-old woman killed when driver fleeing Bessemer police hit her head-on, coroner says
A Birmingham woman was killed when her vehicle was hit head-on by another motorist fleeing Bessemer police.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the fatality victim as Angela Strickland Lockhart. She was 70.
The crash happened at 1:17 p.m. Monday on Interstate 59/20 near Academy Drive in Bessemer.
Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said Lockhart’s vehicle was struck head on by another vehicle that was fleeing Bessemer police. Efforts to reach for police for more information were not immediately successful.
Lockhart was taken to UAB Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 5:16 p.m. At least one other person was injured.
No additional details have been released.
The crash shut down that portion of the interstate for several hours.
Alabama State Troopers are leading the investigation.
