70-year-old man charged with murder in DUI hit-and-run that killed Hueytown teen
A 70-year-old man is charged with murder in a hit-and-run that killed a Hueytown teen.
Walter Lee Ellison, of Fairfield, is also charged with DUI and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in injury or death. Killed in the Tuesday crash was 18-year-old Gabriel Demor Edwards.
Hueytown police on Wednesday released additional details in Edwards’ death and the events leading up to the charges against Ellison.
At 12:08 a.m. Tuesday, a patrol officer spotted a vehicle driving on the wrong side of the road near the intersection of Allison Bonnett Memorial Drive and Brooklane Drive, said Lt. Michael Shupe.
The officer stopped the vehicle, which was a Ford F-150 driven by Ellison.
Ellison was taken into custody for DUI and booked into the Hueytown City Jail.
Officers noticed fresh damage to the front of Ellison’s vehicle. They searched the area and were unable to find anything that matched the damage.
Then, at 6:15 a.m., officers responded to a call of a person down near the intersection of Hueytown Road and Walker Avenue. That’s when Edwards was found dead just off the road.
Shupe said officers immediately saw numerous car parts laying near Edwards.
The evidence showed that Edwards was walking north on Hueytown Road when he was struck by a vehicle also traveling northbound.
Officers from the previous shift passed on information regarding the damage to the earlier DUI arrest.
Evidence at the scene matched the green Ford F-150 from Ellison’s earlier DUI arrest. Additional evidence showed that Edwards had been struck about 11:30 p.m., roughly 30 minutes before Ellison was arrested.
Ellison is awaiting transfer to the Jefferson County Jail where he will be held without bond.
