70-year-old injured in Birmingham shootout while at home with grandchildren

A 70-year-old grandmother was injured when she was caught in crossfire of a shootout in northeast Birmingham.

At least 40 to 50 shots rang out just before 9 p.m. Saturday at Magnolia Court apartments on Westchester Court. That location is across from Monarch Ridge Apartments, formerly known as Valley Brook Apartments.

When the shooting stopped, officers learned the woman had been struck in the leg while inside her apartment with her grandchildren. Police reported that at least one of the woman’s grandsons was on his PlayStation when the bullets entered the home and that the gaming console was also hit.

The woman was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No one else inside the apartment was injured.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said another apartment took gunfire as well as multiple vehicles.

“No one who was the intended target was struck,’’ he said.

The shootout appears to have started in a breezeway at Magnolia Court.

No arrests have been made.

“The issue that our officers face is often when they respond to shootouts such a the one that took place, you always find that an innocent person who has no involvement was struck by gunfire,’’ Fitzgerald said.

“Here we have a 70-year-old grandmother who is enjoying a Saturday evening with her grandchildren and their apartment is shot up,’’ he said. “We’re lucky we didn’t lose any lives.”
