7-year-old dies in early morning Jefferson County house fire

A seven-year-old boy died early this morning in a house fire in Jefferson County.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened at 1:15 a.m. in the 2200 block of Cedar Crest Drive.

Forestdale Fire was able to remove the 7-year-old victim from the home after he had become trapped inside. He was transported to UAB Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Other members of his family were also injured.

Authorities say the boy’s 16-year-old brother was also hospitalized for smoke inhalation after he attempted to save the boy. Their five-year-old sister was treated for minor injuries at Children’s of Alabama. Their grandmother, who was also in the home, was treated and released from UAB Hospital.

Detectives from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Alabama Fire Marshal Office, will be conducting an investigation into the fire.
