69-year-old pleads guilty in 2018 beating death of man with tire jack, brick

A 69-year-old man has pleaded guilty to the slaying of another man who was beaten to death four years ago in Selma.

Winston Lee Harrison, convicted of killing another person in 2001, entered his guilty plea to the charge of murder Wednesday in Dallas County. Killed was 43-year-old Ricky Dewayne Sanders.

Harrison faces the possibility of life in prison. “This was a brutal murder,’’ said District Attorney Michael Jackson.

Dallas County Circuit Judge Marvin Wiggins set Harrison’s sentencing for Dec. 1.

Sanders’ body was discovered Friday, Nov. 9, 2018, on Lamar Avenue in Selma. Sanders was fatally beaten with a tire jack and a brick, authorities said.

Detectives learned that Sanders lived in the basement of the residence Harrison shared with his girlfriend.

The couple told investigators they had last seen Sanders about 1 p.m. the previous day when he dropped off the couple after taking them to sell a sofa, according to court records. Harrison’s girlfriend, Della Olds, told police they were in the bed later that night when their motion light came on about 11:30 p.m. but they said they didn’t see anyone.

Harrison, according to the 2018 criminal complaint, said he was home in bed. However, detectives canvassed the neighborhood and reviewed some footage that showed Harrison going to the area where the victim’s body was found at 11:47 p.m. Thursday and leaving the same area at 11:52 p.m., during the same time he said he was in his bed.

Police also interviewed the woman who discovered Sanders’ body and she told them she heard Harrison and Sanders arguing and then said she heard loud noises, as if people were fighting.

The next day, Selma police officers again questioned Harrison. He reiterated that he was home that Thursday night and didn’t go anywhere.

After detectives showed him video of himself in the area where Sanders’ body was found, Harrison then told them he went to the area to buy crack.

While there, he told them, he smoked a blunt and drank beer with another man, all in less than five minutes. He maintained that he did not have contact with Sanders at all that night.

The detectives then took Harrison back to his home and retrieved the clothing he claimed he was wearing that Thursday night.

After obtaining search warrants, the detectives searched a gold Nissan Altima in Harrison’s yard and found blood on the driver’s seat head rest, charging documents state. There was also blood on the driver’s seat, on the driver’s side hood, the front fender, the driver’s side door and in the trunk area.

While processing the vehicle at police headquarters, a bloody car jack was found inside the vehicle. They then obtained a warrant for his arrest.

Court records show Harrison was arrested on a murder charge but was convicted in 2001 of a reduced charge of manslaughter. He was sentenced to 20 years in that case. Additional details about that slaying weren’t immediately available.

Jackson said Harrison also is a convicted sex offender for a crime he committed in Connecticut.
