69-year-old inmate serving life sentence dies at Donaldson Correctional Facility

A state prison inmate died Sunday at Donaldson Correctional Facility in western Jefferson County.

The inmate’s name is being withheld pending notification of his family, but the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office said he was 69.

The inmate was found unresponsive at 8:07 p.m. in the infirmary where he was being treated for significant natural diseases, said Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 8:30 p.m.

A cause of death has not been determined but Yates said there was no evidence of trauma or foul play.

The inmate was serving a life sentence for robbery, rape and kidnapping from a 1986 conviction out of Mobile County.

An investigation is ongoing by the Alabama Department of Correction – Law Enforcement Services Division.
