An argument inside an Ensley home overnight left one man dead.

Birmingham police West Precinct officers were dispatched at 1:40 a.m. Saturday to a report of a person shot in the 600 block of 13th Street Ensley.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said when officers got to the residence, they found the victim unresponsive inside. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced the man dead on the scene.

The victim has been identified as Rodger Davis. He was 65 and lived in Fairfield.

Fitzgerald said the preliminary investigation indicates the shooting followed an argument between two men.

Several hours later, the other man was taken into custody in the 700 block of 19th Street South. He was undergoing questioning at police headquarters.

Fitzgerald said detectives will present the case information to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office for consideration of criminal charges.

Davis is Birmingham’s third homicide in a week and the 110th so far this year. Of those 110, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency and eight others have been ruled justifiable.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 155 homicides, including the 110 in Birmingham.
