63-year-old identified as woman fatally shot during argument in southwest Birmingham

Authorities have released the name of a woman killed in a Monday night shooting in a southwest Birmingham neighborhood.

Birmingham police on Tuesday identified the victim as Trudy Mustin. She was 63 and lived in Bessemer.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said police first received a Shot Spotter notification of gunfire in the area, and then a call reporting someone had been shot.

When they arrived on the scene, they found Mustin inside a vehicle. She was taken by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service to UAB Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 7:53 p.m.

Fitzgerald said it appeared that two groups of people had been arguing all day. The latest argument took place inside a house, and it ended in gunfire.

The actual location of the shooting was the 1100 block of 15th Street S.W. which is at the Alemeda Avenue intersection.

Multiple people were taken into custody for questioning. Fitzgerald on Tuesday said those people were released after questioning. No arrests have been made.

Mustin is Birmingham’s 106th homicide this year. Of those, one was an officer involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency and eight others have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 151 homicides, including the 106 in Birmingham.
