61-year-old man wounded when gunfire erupts at Tuscaloosa park

The investigation continues into a weekend shooting at a Tuscaloosa park that left a 61-year-old man seriously injured.

Parkgoers at Jaycee Park called 911 at 9:13 p.m. Saturday to report that someone had been shot at the park, which is located at 701 Kicker Road.

There was a large gathering of people at the park during that time, said Tuscaloosa police spokeswoman Stephanie Taylor. Many of the witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots that sounded as if they were fired from multiple weapons.

The victim, whose name has not been released, said he was standing with a group of friends when he heard shots and began to run. He was hit while in the parking lot near the park restrooms.

The first patrol officer on the scene provided medical assistance until Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue paramedics arrived and transported him to DCH Regional Medical Center, Taylor said.

While his injuries are serious, it appears the victim will survive, Taylor said.

As of Monday, Tuscaloosa police have received two reports from people who found bullet damage to vehicles that were parked in the area, but unoccupied, around the time of the shooting.

Anyone with information is asked to call Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit at 205-464-8690 or leave an anonymous tip by calling Crime Stoppers at 205-752-STOP (7867).
