60-mile police chase through 3 Alabama counties ends in crash just feet from Hoover Chick-fil-A drive-thru
A wild police chase that began in Cullman County ended almost in the drive-thru at the Chick-fil-A in Hoover Monday morning.
Alabama State Troopers were notified just after 10 a.m. that Cullman County sheriff’s deputies were pursuing a stolen Toyota Scion XD on Interstate 65 southbound, said Senior Trooper Justin O’Neal.
The deputies enlisted help from troopers.
The chase traveled roughly 60 miles through three counties – Cullman, Blount and Jefferson – and multiple police jurisdictions. Witnesses in Vestavia Hills reported the suspects driving through several store parking lots and then getting on U.S. 31 traveling in the wrong direction, almost striking other motorists head-on.
Jefferson County’s Star 1 helicopter also assisted.
The chase ended when the suspects’ vehicle left U.S. 31 in Hoover and struck a drainage culvert just feet from the Chick-fil-A drive-thru line.
Troopers identified the driver as 43-year-old Steven Garner of Jasper. His passenger has been identified as 50-year-old Dana Morales, also of Jasper.
At least one of the suspects was taken via Hoover Fire to an area hospital. The vehicle was believed to have been initially stolen out of Carbon Hill.
Charges are expected in several jurisdictions.
