6 reality TV stars from Birmingham who made us cheer

The reality TV season is in full swing, and we’ve already seen several contestants from Alabama on shows such as “The Voice,” “American Idol,” “The Bachelor,” “Beat Bobby Flay” and “Farmer Wants a Wife.”

Birmingham people have a long history on reality TV, dating back to Julie Oliver Gentry’s pioneering stint on “The Real World: New York” in 1992. Then known as Julie Oliver, the Birmingham teen bravely allowed the cameras to follow her every movie — well, nearly every move — as she settled into a Manhattan apartment with a motley group of roommates.

Now, as we continue to follow folks from our state on various reality shows, it’s a perfect time to look back on some of the most memorable contestants from Birmingham. Here are six reality stars from the Magic City who made us proud, and made us cheer.

Fashion designer Anthony L. Williams was a fan favorite on “Project Runway” in 2010. He ended up in fifth place during Season 7, but returned for two seasons of “Project Runway All Stars.” (Lifetime photo)
