6 inches (or more) of rain possible for Alabama this week

The National Weather Service continued to monitor the potential for heavy rain for parts of Alabama through this week.

Another few inches rain will also be possible this weekend.

And there could be a few strong storms in the mix as well. The first chance will come on Wednesday, and there could be another chance on Saturday, according to NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center.

Rain will be possible off and on all week. The weather service said parts of the state, mainly in the north and east, could get 3 to 5 inches of rain. Localized spots could get even more — 6 to 7 inches can’t be ruled out.

The rain will come in waves, with the heaviest expected from Tuesday through Thursday, according to forecasters.

The weekend system could bring an additional few inches, although it’s too soon to be specific about amounts.

Much of Alabama is still experiencing drought conditions, so widespread flooding isn’t a concern. However, the weather service said river flooding will be possible later this week, and flood-prone spots could see localized flooding this week.

Forecasters will also be watching for the potential for a few stronger storms this week and this weekend.

The Storm Prediction Center has added a Level 1 out of 5 risk for severe weather for part of west Alabama for Wednesday (likely Wednesday night) as a cold front moves into the region:

The weather service said that the strongest storms on Wednesday could have damaging winds, and a tornado can’t be ruled out.

Another threat for severe storms has been added to the forecast for Saturday, and it (for now) includes a large part of the state. Here’s the long-range outlook for Saturday:

Colder temperatures are expected to follow the weekend system, and the weather system in Huntsville said there’s a chance that black ice could be a concern on roads in north Alabama by Sunday.
