6 detained in kidnapping, brutal murder of young Birmingham mother Mahogany Jackson

Three women and three men have been detained in the ongoing investigation into the kidnapping and murder of a young Birmingham mother.

Mahogany Jackson, 20, texted family members early Sunday, saying she was being held hostage and to send police. She also sent them her location.

Her body was found in Monday’s predawn hours under a mattress in an illegal dumping site in the 1700 block of Laurel Avenue in southwest Birmingham. She had been shot at least one time.

None of the suspects have been formally charged with any crime.

Birmingham police can hold suspects for at least 48 hours while they continue the investigation and work to obtain formal warrants.

The six suspects were taken into custody throughout Monday, beginning in the morning when police detectives and the Crime Reduction Team descended on Serenity Apartments, the place Jackson told her family she was being held against her will.

A 26-year-old woman was taken into custody there about 10 a.m. She and Jackson were acquaintances who family said had been in a dispute prior to the death.

A second woman, age 23, was also taken into custody Monday morning.

Four more suspects, a 23-year-old woman and three men – two of them 25 and one 18 – were booked into the Birmingham City Jail early Tuesday.

The ordeal began early Sunday when family members say Jackson texted them.

She said she was being held hostage, and to send police. She shared her location with them on her cell phone.

Jackson’s mother, Gail Maddox, previously told AL.com she was on her way to pick up her son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter from the airport in Atlanta when her other daughter called her and said she’d received a disturbing message from Jackson.

Maddox looked at her phone – it was 7:46 a.m. – and she, too, had missed calls through Facebook messenger, but Maddox was on the phone, so she didn’t receive the notification.

“She sent me a text message that said she was being held hostage and sent her location,’’ Maddox said. She told her mom not to call her but to call police.

Family members rushed to that location, as did Birmingham police.

Jackson was nowhere to be found at Serenity Apartments in Birmingham’s Powderly community when police and family members showed up there.

The resident of the apartment, the 26-year-old suspect who was first to be taken into custody – finally allowed them inside but they did not see Jackson.

That woman told police Jackson had been there, but had left at 2 a.m.

“I know that’s not true because she sent that message and her location at 7:46 a.m.,’’ Maddox previously said.

Birmingham homicide detectives worked throughout Sunday and overnight until about 2:15 a.m. Monday when Jackson’s body was found.

By Sunday night, Maddox knew something terrible had happened.

“I feel it in my stomach,’’ she said. “My daughter would never say call the police, but she was afraid and that’s why she asked us to.’’

On Monday, detectives carried out search warrants, including at the second-floor apartment unit where Jackson had been held. They also investigated several nearby locations.

Jackson leaves behind a toddler daughter.

A candlelight vigil is set for Thursday at Serentiy Apartments.

The investigation continues. Anyone with information is asked to call Birmingham homicide investigators at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
