54-year-old inmate found dead in cell at Donaldson Correctional Facility

An inmate at William Donaldson Correctional Facility died Thursday at the west Jefferson County lockup.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the inmate as Tommy Tunstall. He was 54.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said Tunstall’s cellmate found him unresponsive at 9:30 a.m. He was pronounced dead at 10 a.m.

An autopsy is set to be performed today.

Tunstall was service a life sentence for 1996 convictions of first-degree robbery and second-degree theft of property out of Monroe County.

He is the 21st Donaldson inmate to die this year. In 2022, 40 inmates died at the prison.
