53-year-old charged in domestic shooting that critically injured 13-year-old boy in Bessemer

A 53-year-old man has been charged in a shooting that critically injured a 13-year-old boy in Bessemer.

Helvetius Hall is charged with first-degree assault and discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling.

The shooting stemmed from a domestic violence incident. Authorities are not releasing the relationship between the suspect and the victim.

Bessemer police responded just after 6 p.m. Tuesday to a residence in the 100 block of 22nd Street. When they arrived on the scene, they found the child wounded.

The boy was rushed to UAB West and then transferred to Children’s of Alabama. Det. Justin Burmeister said he remains in critical condition.

Hall was taken into custody at the scene. Additional details surrounding the shooting have not been released.

Hall will be held in the Jefferson County Jail on bonds totaling $1 million.
