51-year-old man killed at Tuscaloosa County home after shooting someone else, authorities say

A 51-year-old man was shot to death early Saturday after he shot someone else, authorities said.

The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit identified the slain man as Reggie Coverson. He lived in Tuscaloosa.

Sheriff’s deputies received a 911 call at 3:14 a.m. regarding a shooting at a home in the 2000 block of Stardust Drive. They arrived to find Coverson dead on the scene and a 23-year-old man wounded.

The surviving victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, said TVCU Capt. Marty Sellers. He is in stable condition.

A 36-year-old man who was on the scene told deputies he shot Coverson. He was taken in for questioning.

Sellers said multiple witnesses were also interviewed.

The case was presented to the Tuscaloosa County District Attorney’s Office and the shooter was released with no immediate charges filed.

Seller said the incident stemmed from a verbal argument. All those involved lived at the home, but were not related.

“It was determined that Mr. Coverson appeared to be the aggressor in the incident and that he was shot in self-defense,’’ Sellers said.

The case will be presented to a grand jury.
