5 things to know about Culinary Dropout in Birmingham

Culinary Dropout, The Summit’s newest restaurant, is set to open on Wednesday. It’s the first location in Alabama and the 12th location in the country. The gastropub is known for their various takes on cuisines, such as pretzel bites and provolone fondue, 36-hour pork ribs, and fried chicken drizzled with honey.

The restaurant was started by a college dropout and his culinary partners 14 years ago in Arizona. Since then, its joined the Fox Restaurant Concept group and became sister restaurants to North Italia.

“We are thrilled to bring Culinary Dropout to the city of Birmingham,” Fox Restaurant Concepts founder and James Beard-nominated restaurateur Sam Fox said in a press release. “We have worked vigorously to create a dining experience deserving of the Birmingham community. We can’t wait to welcome guests with Culinary Dropout’s iconic hospitality and serve damn good food and drinks.”

The Culinary Dropout location is at the second turn at the light in the retail shopping center. The restaurant sits where Macaroni Grill used to be, and across from P.F. Chang’s, sharing the same parking lot.

Here is a list of five things you may not know about the new restaurant.

Appetizers or antipasti?

One popular section of their menu is their antipasti, which is a twist on the Italian tradition of a first course meal, that includes small portions or bite-size meats, cheese, breads, vegetables — basically, a charcuterie board. Obviously, you don’t have to choose between an appetizer and antipasti, but if you do choose the meat-and-cheese board, you’ll have at least 15 items to pick from like Molinari Soppressata, pimento cheese, and gochujang Brussels sprouts with toasted bread drizzled with balsamic dressing.

Yesterday’s soup

The restaurant prides itself on serving yesterday’s soup because “it’s always better the next day!” Essentially, it’s their soup of the day the chef makes. According to Culinary Dropout’s spokesperson, Monica Crothers, “it allows the flavors of the soup to come together in a delicious harmony that warms your soul!” Depending on the day, here are some of the flavors you can expect: Beef chili, beef and barley, chicken pot pie, clam chowder, fire roasted red pepper soup, minestrone, sausage and kale minestrone , thai coconut mushroom soup, chicken noodle, French onion, tomato, meatball, broccoli beer cheddar, and chicken tortilla.

Crossbody bags

When inside the restaurant, you may notice staff and servers carrying crossbody bags. That’s because they have their handy-dandy notepads, pen, and lighter at all times for the flame under the pretzels and fondue. According to the restaurant spokesperson, the crossbody/fanny pack allows them to showcase their own sense of style all while holding the things they need each shift in one place.

Signature cocktails (and local beer!)

Clearly, Culinary Dropout likes to give you options. The bar is a full 360 degrees, equipped with TVs for Alabama sports fans featuring the restaurant’s signature cocktails and huge selection of craft and local beers. The bar has drinks like the “Playboi Stache” (vanilla tea-soaked vodka, passoā passion fruit liqueur, orange oil), “El Matador” (Gran Centenario Añejo, elderflower, ginger agave, orange bitters), or “Campfire Vibes” (100 proof bonded bourbon, chai jacked apple cider, Spanish vanilla, roasted five spice). The restaurant also partnered with local Alabama brews to include Back Forty Beer Co.’s “Cart Barn Light,” Good People Brewing Company’s “Muchacho Mexican Lager,” and Yellowhammer Brewing’s “Belgian White,” among other craft beers.

Happy hour and brunch with live music

Culinary Dropout offers weekday happy hour special from 3-6 p.m. at the bar. Menu items consist of Frosty Fries, Spicy Korean Pork Ribs, and BBQ Pork Belly Nachos. There is also a selection of Long Afternoon Iced Teas, the classic mix of various cocktails, four beer options, and three different types of wine. Brunch is also offered every weekend along with live music. The brunch menu offers nine items from fried chicken and buttermilk biscuits to a breakfast burrito, to banana bread French toast. The regular lunch/dinner menu is available during weekend brunch hours as well, along with the full beer, wine, and cocktail menu.
