5-star freshman Aden Holloway out with injury for Auburn’s preseason exhibition

Auburn men’s basketball’s highly talented freshman guard Aden Holloway will not play in the team’s exhibition game against Auburn-Montgomery on Wednesday at Neville Arena due to an injury.

Holloway injured his ankle during the team’s scrimmage against Furman on Sunday and has been seen wearing a boot early this week. He was not wearing a boot when he walked out onto the court Wednesday night. He did take a few shots before the game before sitting on the bench in sweatpants during warm ups.

His status for the upcoming Nov. 7 season opener against Baylor in South Dakota is unclear.

Holloway has impressed already in the lead-up to his first collegiate season. In the team’s open practice on Oct. 21, Holloway had 12 points including draining multiple very long-range 3-pointers. Holloway finished with eight assists to two turnovers in the team’s intrasquad scrimmage that day.

During the fall, Holloway has been in a competition with sophomore Tre Donaldson for the starting point guard job. Donaldson, of course, will then start at point guard Wednesday in the exhibition and cause some reshuffling among Auburn’s guards for depth at the ball-handling position whether that be junior FIU transfer Denver Jones, who will likely be Auburn’s starting shooting guard, or senior K.D. Johnson.

Head coach Bruce Pearl has frequently said this fall Auburn will have a 10-man rotation and doesn’t have a clear starting five because the gap between the No. 1 and No. 10 player in that rotation has been so small.

“I can tell you, though, there will be a ton of parity — more than any team I’ve coached, I would say the balance of minutes will be the greatest on this team more than any team I’ve coached,” Pearl said Monday. “And I’ve played 10 guys double-digit minutes my entire career. We won’t drop off much when we go to the bench. And, again, are our starters good enough? There’s just not a lot of drop-off. Maybe, probably, a little bit of both.”

Holloway committed to Auburn on Aug. 1, 2022, out of Prolific Prep in California. He was rated 5-star recruit in the 247Sports composite ranking and a consensus top-20 player in the nation for the 2023 class.

He is the only scholarship freshman on Auburn’s roster for this season.
