5 questions with Baldwin County State Rep. Matt Simpson

Editor’s note: This fall, the Lede is reaching out to your elected representatives, asking what they’re anticipating for the 2024 session and what they’re doing to stay in touch with constituents.

Today’s Q&A is with State Rep. Matt Simpson, R-Daphne, who has served in the Alabama House since 2018. In his time in the Senate, Simpson has served as chair of the Ethics and Campaign Finance Committee and of the Baldwin County Legislative Delegation, in addition to membership on other committees.

Questions and answers have been condensed and edited for clarity.

Is there anything that didn’t pass in the most recent session that you’d like to see revisited, and why?

[Rep.] Jamie Kiel’s (R-Russellville) ballot harvesting bill was a bill that passed the House, but it did not come out of the Senate. I think that’s important for election integrity. I think we want to make sure that “one person, one vote” continues to be the rule here. And I think we have strong elections in Alabama, but we need to make sure we can tighten that, to make sure ballot harvesting is not permitted here.
