5 potential transfer targets for Auburn basketball

Bruce Pearl and the Auburn men’s basketball staff has a rebuild on its hands this offseason.

Auburn is losing the majority of its production from the 2024-2025 season, including key players such as Johni Broome, Dylan Cardwell, Miles Kelly and others.

The transfer portal is open, and Auburn has already been active, adding UCF transfer Keyshawn Hall. The Tigers are from done, though, still looking to fill a handful of spots, particularly in the frontcourt.

Pearl and the staff have reportedly been in contact a number of players currently in the portal. Here are five potential targets that stick out.

G Rodney Rice, Maryland

Rice is the highest-ranked player in the portal on this list, according to 247Sports. He made 32 starts for Maryland this past season, averaging 13.8 points per game.

He also recently included Auburn in his top six, along with Villanova, Tennessee, USC, Gonzaga and a return to Maryland.

He’d primarily add scoring to Auburn’s backcourt, helping fill the hole left Denver Jones and potentially help replace Tahaad Pettiford if he decides to remain in the NBA draft.

F Malique Ewin, Florida State

At 6-foot-11, 230 pounds, Ewin would help fill the hole in Auburn’s frontcourt left by Broome and Cardwell’s departures.

He averaged 14.2 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game this past season at Florida State. Ewin is reportedly down to five schools, including Auburn, Kansas, Arkansas, Mississippi State and Virginia.

Ewin likely wouldn’t be the only frontcourt player Auburn looks to add, especially if Chaney Johnson is unable to return for another season. Either way, he’d add some offensive production in the paint.

G Lamar Wilkerson, Sam Houston State

Wilkerson was one of the top scorers in the country this past season, averaging 20.5 points per game and shooting 44.5% from 3 at Sam Houston State.

At 6-foot-5 and shooting over 40% from 3, he could play a similar role to what Kelly played for the Tigers this past season. Wilkerson reportedly plans to visit Auburn, Kentucky, Indiana and Ole Miss.

His Auburn visit is reportedly set for April 14, according to On3.

G Elyjah Freeman, Lincoln Memorial

Freeman might be the most under the radar player on this list, entering the portal after starting his college career at Division II Lincoln Memorial University.

He averaged 18.9 points per game this past season while shooting 45.6% from 3, albeit on just 57 attempts. At 6-foot-8, Freeman plays like a big guard, something many teams are after.

Freeman is reportedly set to visit Auburn on April 11, according to On3. Tennessee and Kentucky also seem to be competing for him.

F Eddie Lampkin, Syracuse

Lampkin is more of a longshot since he would need a waiver to obtain another year of college eligibility. Despite that, Auburn was one of a handful of schools to reach out to him after he entered the transfer portal, according to multiple reports.

Lampkin previously spent time at TCU, Colorado and Syracuse, averaging 11.5 points and 9.6 rebounds per game with the Orange this past season.

He would be another solid addition to Auburn’s frontcourt, coming with a history of production and plenty of high major experience.
