Throw in some goggles, act like you’re enjoying a swim, and you are one of Alabama’s biggest memes of 2024. In January, a man was arrested after jumping naked into the massive aquarium at the Bass Pro Shop in Leeds, Ala.

Mountain Brook man stuck in urn

Items: Large sheet of foam, string, pool noodle. Suddenly, you’re halfway down a fake foam urn.

In January, Connor Padgett got stuck in decorative urn during a New Year’s Eve party in Mountain Brook. Throw in one of his catchphrases while you’re at it: “Call the fire department to break this m—–f—–!” Padgett did eventually escape the urn.

Go to Church, or the Devil Will Get You! sign

Items: Party hats, headband, hot glue, red paint.

The “Go to Church or the Devil Will Get You” sign along Interstate 65 near Prattville has become a landmark in Alabama. The sign is the creation of local businessman W.S. “Bill” Newell and it is now maintained by his sons, Sam and Keith Newell, on family property. AL.com’s Kelly Kazek writes, “The senior Newell was known as a Christian and a patriot who enjoyed providing the message for motorists to contemplate.”

Montgomery Brawl Kit

In August 2023, chaos known as the Montgomery Riverboat Brawl ensued after a violent fight erupted at Riverfront Park. Videos showed a Black riverboat co-captain attacked by a group of white people as other Black people rushed to his defense. It went viral, memes were born, and folding chairs have since become symbolic with the state’s capital.

U.S. Sen. Katie Britt in March offered the Republican Party’s response to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address, broadcasting from her kitchen in Alabama into homes across the nation. Britt, 42, was the first Alabamian to deliver the response to the State of the Union. It dominated the national conversation for part of a week, with “Saturday Night Live” even casting “Avengers” star Scarlett Johannson to play Britt.
