5 Huntsville area HS football games to watch in Week 9

Here are five games to watch in the Huntsville area this week with the complete schedule following.

PISGAH (7-0) AT FYFFE (6-1)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Paul Benefield Stadium

Last week: Class 2A, No. 3-ranked Pisgah beat visiting North Sand Mountain 54-13. Fourth-ranked Fyffe blanked visiting Sand Rock 47-0.

Region: Both teams are 5-0 in Class 2A, Region 7 and tied for first place.

The skinny: This matchup pits the No. 2 scoring offense in Class 2A (Pisgah, 50 points per game) against the No. 1 scoring defense (Fyffe, 5.3 points). … Pisgah quarterback Mason Holcomb completed five passes against North Sand Mountain — four went for touchdowns. … Fyffe has recorded four shutouts this season. … Logan Anderson and Hunter Lathum combined for four rushing touchdowns against Sand Rock. All of Fyffe’s 338 yards of offense came on the ground. … The Red Devils average 46.4 points per game, fourth-highest in 2A. … Defending state champion Fyffe has won seven consecutive region titles between time in 2A and 3A, including the 2A-Region 7 crown last season. … Fyffe defeated Pisgah twice last season — 40-6 in the regular season and 41-14 in the semifinals. The Red Devils hold an 18-13-1 series lead. Pisgah last won in 2003. The teams did not play between 2006-21. …This is Fyffe coach Paul Benefield’s 400th game of his 32-year career; he is 343-56, according to AHSFHS.org, including a 298-45 record in 27 seasons at Fyffe.

ARAB (5-2) AT GUNTERSVILLE (6-0)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Chorba-Lee Stadium

Last week: Arab defeated visiting Boaz 63-35. Class 5A, No. 6-ranked Guntersville had an open week.

Region: Guntersville is atop Class 5A, Region 7 with a 3-0 record. Arab and Scottsboro are tied for second at 3-1, with the Wildcats owning the head-to-head tiebreaker.

The skinny: Guntersville can clinch the region title with a win. The Wildcats were region champ in two of the past three seasons. .. Guntersville was last in action Oct. 6, beating Scottsboro 20-6. … The Wildcats only allow 9.7 points per game, fourth-lowest in 5A. … Arab quarterback Drew Puccio is coming off an all-around effort against Boaz in which he scored four touchdowns — two passing, one rushing and one receiving — and returned a kick 81 yards to set up a TD. … Arab beat Guntersville 34-20 last season to snap a nine-game losing streak to the Wildcats and win its first region title since 1993.

BOB JONES (4-3) AT AUSTIN (6-2)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Austin Field, Decatur

Last week: Bob Jones beat visiting, Class 7A, No. 10-ranked Sparkman 31-13. Austin defeated visiting James Clemens 28-7.

Region: Bob Jones is 4-1 in Class 7A, Region 4 and tied with James Clemens for first place; the Jets own the head-to-head tiebreaker. Austin is 3-2 and tied for third with Sparkman and Florence — the two teams to beat the Black Bears in region play.

The skinny: Both teams are riding four-game winning streaks. …. Austin is the defending region champion. Bob Jones’ last region title was in 2015. … Austin’s Gavin Fuqua ran for 167 yards and three touchdowns against James Clemens. The Black Bears held the Jets to their lowest point output of the season. … Austin has the No. 4 scoring defense in 7A (11.4 points per game) and has held its last three opponents to just seven points each. … Bob Jones’ Tyren Washington ran for 142 yards and two touchdowns against Sparkman. The Patriots forced four turnovers and held the Senators to 30 points below their scoring average. … Austin blocked two Bob Jones extra point attempts in a 28-26 win last season. The Black Bears hold a 14-7 series lead.

PRICEVILLE (4-4) AT WESTMINSTER CHRISTIAN (6-1)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Earl Van Dyke Stadium, Huntsville

Last week: Priceville lost 40-8 to visiting North Jackson. Westminster won 48-7 at Madison County.

Region: Westminster is 5-0 in Class 4A, Region 8 and in first place. Priceville is 4-1 and tied for second with Randolph.

The skinny: Westminster can clinch the region title with a win. The Wildcats, who began play in 2005, have two previous region crowns — 2019 and 2018 in Class 3A. … Westminster senior quarterback Brandon Musch scored three times last week, bringing his career touchdowns accounted for total to 166, third-most in AHSAA history behind Lanett’s Kristian Story (175) and Piedmont’s Jack Hayes (223). Musch passed Bo Nix two weeks ago for the No. 3 spot. Musch’s 12,300 yards of offense are fourth on the all-time list, just behind Nix’s 12,497. Hayes and Story are also 1-2 in this category. …Westminster averages 51.4 points per game, second-most in 4A. … Priceville is the defending region champion. … The Bulldogs set a program record for points scored in a 72-45 win over Westminster last season. … Blitz Clemons, who scored Priceville’s only TD against North Jackson last week, ran for 138 yards and two touchdowns on only seven carries against Westminster. Musch accounted for six touchdowns — five rushing and one passing. … The Wildcats hold a 3-2 series edge.

RED BAY (5-2) AT TANNER (6-2)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Rip Swanner Stadium

Last week: Red Bay beat visiting Falkville 44-14. Class 2A, No. 10-ranked Tanner won 64-34 at Lexington.

Region: Tanner is in first place of Class 2A, Region 8 with a 5-0 record. Red Bay is 3-1 and part of a three-team tie for second with Lexington and Hatton.

The skinny: Tanner mounted an epic comeback last week at Lexington, scoring 56 unanswered points after falling behind 34-8 in the second quarter. The Rattlers’ second-half surge included four touchdowns — two rushing and two receiving — from Endymion Tyus and three TD runs from Tailan Hall. … Tanner has won six straight games. … The Rattlers can clinch the region title with a win. Tanner last won a region in 2016, coach Laron White’s final season. … Red Bay beat Tanner 54-14 last season. The Rattlers have an 11-10-1 series edge.
