5 Huntsville area HS football games to watch in Week 6
Here are five games to watch in the Huntsville area this week with the complete schedule following.
OXFORD (5-0) AT HARTSELLE (4-1)
Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, J.P. Cain Stadium
Last week: Class 6A, No. 9-ranked Oxford won 40-6 at Pinson Valley. Sixth-ranked Hartselle beat visiting Gadsden City 31-28.
The skinny: Hartselle starting quarterback Landon Blackwood suffered a knee injury in the first half of the Gadsden City game. Junior backup Noah Lee had a touchdown run as the Tigers amassed 247 yards on the ground. … Oxford is tied for the No. 5 scoring defense in Class 6A (9.6 points per game). The Yellow Jackets haven’t allowed an offensive touchdown the past two weeks. … Oxford’s Jayden Thomas ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns against Pinson Valley. He also caught a TD pass. … The Yellow Jackets are 5-0 for the first time since their 2019 state championship season. … Harstelle beat Oxford 69-21 last season. The Tigers scored 52 unanswered points after falling behind 21-17 midway through the second quarter. Oxford won playoff meetings in 1996 and 1982.
MUSCLE SHOALS (4-0) AT JAMES CLEMENS (4-1)
Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Madison City Schools Stadium
Last week: Class 6A, No. 5-ranked Muscle Shoals had an open week. Class 7A James Clemens won 14-7 at Florence.
The skinny: Both teams have played the other’s archrival: James Clemens held off Florence last week, and Muscle Shoals dominated Bob Jones 48-14 in Week 1. … The Trojans were last in action Sept. 15, rolling up 612 yards of offense in a 66-28 win over Athens. Jaquess Greene had four rushing touchdowns and a kick return TD. … James Clemens receiver Ty Doughty has scored touchdowns in four ways this season. He threw a TD pass against Florence, adding to his resume of scoring via reception, rush and punt return. … Jets safety Mark Woods picked off two passes against Florence; the first set up a TD, and the second sealed the victory. … Muscle Shoals beat James Clemens 38-10 last season in the first meeting between the programs.
PISGAH (4-0) AT SYLVANIA (4-0)
Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Ram Stadium
Last week: Class 2A, No. 3-ranked Pisgah beat visiting Ider 46-16. Class 3A, No. 8 Sylvania defeated visiting Geraldine 37-16.
The skinny: Pisgah is aiming for its first 5-0 start since an undefeated regular season in 2003. Sylvania is off to its best start since opening 7-0 in 2017. … Pisgah averages 51 points per game, third-most in Class 2A and sixth-most among all classifications. … Sylvania averages 43.3, sixth-most in 3A. … Sixth-year Pisgah coach Luke Pruitt has the chance to take sole possession of No. 3 on the program’s all-time wins list. His 33 victories are tied with Terry Kenimer (2005-12) and Hearth Kirby (2001-04), according to AHSFHS.org. Sam Kenimer (64 wins from 1961-70) and Freddie Tidmore (47 from 1987-94) are ahead of the trio. … Sylvania beat Pisgah 34-7 last season for its fifth consecutive series win and a 30-21 all-time lead.
SCOTTSBORO (4-0) AT PRICEVILLE (3-2)
Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Bulldog Stadium
Last week: Class 5A Scottsboro doubled up visiting Arab 28-14. Class 4A Priceville defeated visiting New Hope 36-14.
The skinny: Scottsboro is off to its best start since sophomore quarterback Bo Nix helped lead the Wildcats to an undefeated regular season in 2016. … Scottsboro ran for 308 yards against Arab. Jacobi Edmondson is averaging 124 yards rushing per game. … The Wildcats have the No. 1 scoring offense in Class 5A at 47.8 points per game. … Priceville has won three straight. Jake England ran for three TDs against New Hope. … Priceville beat Scottsboro 28-21 last season in the first matchup between the programs.
ARAB (4-1) AT FORT PAYNE (2-2)
Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Wildcat Stadium
Last week: Class 5A Arab lost 28-14 to Scottsboro. Class 6A Fort Payne had an open week.
The skinny: Both teams are looking to bounce back. Arab is coming off its poorest offensive performance of the season. Fort Payne allowed 26 unanswered points in the second half of a 63-41 loss at Gadsden City on Sept. 15. … Arab does much of its damage on the ground, with the duo of Logan Silva and Logan Alldredge having combined for 12 rushing touchdowns. … Fort Payne averages 51.8 points per game, which tops Class 6A and is tied for No. 4 among all classifications. Conversely, the Wildcats yield 39.8 points per game, which ranks 50th among 57 teams in 6A. …. Fort Payne quarterback Dax Varnadore has thrown for 1,256 yards this season, with 14 touchdowns and only one interception. … Fort Payne shut out Arab 21-0 last season. The Knights prevailed 20-7 in 2021 to snap a 13-game losing streak to the Wildcats. Fort Payne leads the series 21-9-2.
