5 Huntsville area HS football games to watch in Week 2

Here are five games to watch in the Huntsville area this week with the complete schedule following.

AUSTIN (1-0) AT DECATUR (1-0)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Ogle Stadium

Last week: Class 7A Austin beat visiting Hartselle 28-17. Class 6A Decatur defeated visiting Mae Jemison 54-23.

The skinny: This is the 61st edition of the River City Rivalry. Decatur won 28-14 last season to snap a seven-game series skid and increase its all-time lead to 37-23. … Former Auburn standout Aairon Savage won his debut as the Red Raiders’ coach last week, while 14th-year Austin coach Jeremy Perkins earned his 91st victory. … Decatur quarterback Bradin Dupper accounted for six touchdowns – four passing and two rushing – against Mae Jemison. … Austin’s J.L. Davis threw two of the Black Bears’ three touchdown passes against Hartselle. Nathan Taylor returned a fumble – forced by Solomon Lyle – 45 yards for a TD to clinch the win.

MOUNTAIN BROOK (0-1) AT JAMES CLEMENS (1-0)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Thursday, Madison City Schools Stadium

Last week: Class 6A Mountain Brook lost 35-10 to visiting Vestavia Hills. Class 7A James Clemens won 26-21 at Gardendale.

The skinny: James Clemens’ Ty Marsh threw an 82-yard touchdown pass to Ty Doughty late in the fourth quarter for the go-ahead score against Gardendale. Brycen Dowdell followed with an interception to seal the victory. … The Jets passed for 174 yards and ran for 144. … Mountain Brook’s Cole Gamble rushed for 213 yards against Vestavia Hills but was held out of the end zone as the Rebels snapped a six-game losing streak to the Spartans. … Gamble was one of six Mountain Brook players who scored a TD in last season’s 42-21 win over James Clemens. … The Jets won meetings in 2015 and 2014.

WEST LIMESTONE (1-0) AT CLEMENTS (1-0)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, M.T. Newman Stadium, Coxey

Last week: Class 4A West Limestone won 16-7 at Ardmore. Class 3A Clements won 45-12 at Holly Pond.

The skinny: Clements is trying to snap a 10-game losing streak to one of its county rivals. West Limestone beat the Colts 56-20 last season to increase its series lead to 34-23. Clements last won in 2008, the last of five straight victories over the Wildcats. … West Limestone is coming off their sixth consecutive season-opening victory. Easton Smith had a pair of TD runs against Ardmore. He ran for 203 yards and three TDS on only seven carries against Clements last season. … Colts do-everything star Jayden Gilbert scored six touchdowns – four rushing and two passing – against Holly Pond.

RANDOLPH (0-1) AT MADISON ACADEMY (1-0)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Bill Washington Stadium, Huntsville

Last week: Class 4A Randolph lost 41-20 to visiting West Morgan. Class 3A Madison Academy won 42-6 at Deshler.

The skinny: Randolph defeated Madison Academy 46-33 last season for its first victory in 14 tries against the Mustangs. … Madison Academy’s Ken Cherry ran for 221 yards and three touchdowns against Deshler. He rushed for 128 yards (no TDs) against Randolph last season. … The Mustangs are 97-1 when scoring 40 or more points since 2000, according to AHSFHS.org. The loss? Last season’s 48-45 overtime playoff thriller against Sylvania. … New Randolph starting quarterback William Mitchell accounted for the Raiders’ three touchdowns against West Morgan. He scored twice on the ground and once through the air and was picked off twice.

HAZEL GREEN (0-1) AT GRISSOM (0-1)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Joe Davis Stadium, Huntsville

Last week: Class 6A Hazel Green lost 31-0 at Sparkman in a game that was suspended at halftime due to a “major disruption.” Grissom lost 35-12 at Russellville.

The skinny: Football returns to Joe Davis Stadium, which reopened in May as home of Huntsville City FC soccer following major renovations. Originally opened in 1985 as home of Class Double-A Huntsville Stars baseball, the site also hosted some high school football games for parts of two decades. That included Hazel Green’s first “home” playoff game in 1998. … The Trojans and Grissom are both looking to get back on track after going a combined 7-14 in 2022. … Hazel Green blanked the Tigers 23-0 last season. Grissom won the previous four meetings and holds a 13-8 series lead.
