5 games to watch in Huntsville area for Jan. 8-13

Here are five high school basketball games this week that look promising for fans from around the Huntsville metro area. Six teams ranked by the Alabama Sports Writers Association are involved in these five games – including three No. 1 squads.

BUCKHORN (9-9) AT LEE-HUNTSVILLE (13-8) – GIRLS

Day/Time: Tuesday, 6 p.m.

The skinny: Senior Limaya Batimba is a double-double machine for Lee. The 5-foot-8 guard has scored and rebounded in double figures in 19 of 21 games thus far. Batimba leads the Generals at 18 points and 11.5 rebounds per game, followed by Londan Harris at 10.1 and 6.2. Harris averages 4.4 assists per outing. The Generals are 2-1 in Class 6A, Area 16 play. Buckhorn is 0-2 in area play and lost 53-33 at home to Lee on Dec. 1. That setback started a 2-7 run over the Bucks’ past nine games.

BUCKHORN (16-5) AT LEE-HUNTSVILLE (4-8) – BOYS

Day/Time: Tuesday, 7:30 p.m.

The skinny: This game is the nightcap of a great double-header at Lee and is a rematch of a 59-50 Buckhorn win at home on Dec. 1. Defending state champion and top-ranked Buckhorn is 2-0 in Class 6A, Area 16 while Lee is 2-1. Top contender for Mr. Basketball Caleb Holt is a must-see as just a freshman. The 6-foot-5, 200-pounder already has scholarship offers from eight SEC schools. In four games against tough competition in the Huntsville City Classic, he averaged 27.25 points per outing. Lee stumbled out of the gate, losing three in a row, and went 0-4 in the Palm Desert Holiday Classic in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Coach Greg Brown’s squad is 4-3 against Alabama teams with losses to 7A No. 1 Huntsville, 7A Grissom (by 2) and 6A No. 1 Buckhorn.

LAUDERDALE COUNTY (18-0) AT CLEMENTS (11-6) – GIRLS

Day/Time: Tuesday, 6 p.m.

The skinny: This clash in Athens is a big Area 16 game featuring Class 3A No. 1 Lauderdale County against No. 2 Clements. Lauderdale County beat the Colts 38-27 at home on Dec. 12 in the lowest-scoring game of the season for the team from Rogersville. Lauderdale County has averaged 63.9 points per game while the Colts score 53.3 a game. Clements has won games scoring in the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and beat Tanner 94-14 last week. Clements won a state championship in 2010 and finished second last season, falling 52-48 to Trinity to finish 28-7. Lauderdale County holds the AHSAA record with 13 state championships, the last coming in 2016 – the end of a five-year streak that was the standard until Hazel Green won its sixth consecutive title last season. The Tigers also finished second in 1988, ‘94, ‘98, 2001 and 2018.

MADISON ACADEMY (17-4) AT ATHENS (12-5) – BOYS

Day/Time: Tuesday, 7 p.m.

The skinny: The Mustangs, ranked sixth in Class 5A, step up to meet Athens on the road after two straight huge wins – 81-17 over Area 16 foe Ardmore and 68-35 over 5A Fairview. Tom Berryman’s squad’s only losses have been at 6A Mountain Brook, to 5A Ramsay, 7A Grissom and 6A No. 1 Buckhorn. The Mustangs have a balanced attack with Kahleel Green and Jaylen Blackwell scoring 11 points a game. Cam Bell scores 10.3 and Mike Stanford scores 9.4 a game. Stanford leads MA with 7.5 rebounds a game, followed by Blackwell’s 6.1 per outing. Athens has lost two straight – to Muscle Shoals and at Red Bay – and fell 54-31 in its first meeting at Madison Academy on the road on Dec. 12.

HUNTSVILLE (21-1) AT ALBERTVILLE (18-3) – BOYS

Day/Time: Tuesday, 7:30 p.m.

The skinny: It’s No. 1 vs. No. 7 in a Class 7A, Area 7 showdown. The Aggies are 1-1 in area play while Huntsville won its area opener over Grissom on Friday. Christian Schweers’ Crimson Panthers have been virtually unstoppable against all kinds of opposing strategies – scoring 60.1 points per game while giving up 46.5. Huntsville’s lone loss was on Nov. 15 at now 16-0 Monteverde Academy of Orlando. Albertville scores 64.5 points a game and allows 51.9. The Aggies are 1-1 in area play, with a 68-46 win over Sparkman and a 51-49 loss to Grissom, both on the road. Huntsville’s 1-0 in the area with Friday’s 60-51 win at home over Grissom. Cooper Colvin averaged 17 points and 6 assists in three games as Albertville finished second in the Gulf Coast Classic. Caleb Harrison leads Huntsvile, scoring around 20 points and 10 rebounds a game. Major Deacon is in his first season leading Albertville, after stints at Baker, Austin and Pleasant Home. Schweers is in his sixth year at Huntsville.
