5 freshmen who stood out during A-Day for Alabama football
Alabama football held its A-Day open practice on Saturday, its last session of spring ball. The Crimson Tide didn’t play a traditional game, but the session at Bryant-Denny Stadium still provided a glimpse at some of Alabama’s up-and-comers.
Plenty of freshmen got their chances during the A-Day practice, including quarterback Keelon Russell, who made a few nice plays at quarterback, but also threw a pick.
Russell aside, here are five freshmen who stood out on A-Day.
Ivan Taylor
Taylor was the first freshman to make a big impression at A-Day. The Crimson Tide came out of warmups and went into an 11-on-11 period, with each of the three quarterbacks getting a chance to lead either the first or second-team offense.
When Keelon Russell took over the second group, Taylor performed an act of freshman-on-freshman violence. The safety picked off Russell, who had attempted an inaccurate deep throw.
Taylor joined the Tide during ReliaQuest Bowl practices as an early enrollee. He looked sharp in his first public action for Alabama.
Derek Meadows
One of two freshman receivers to stand out during the A-Day practice, Meadows made a big impact. The Nevada native stands 6-foot-5, weighs in at 208 pounds and showed off his physical gifts during practice.
Meadows made several impressive catches. The highlight came during the final periods of practice, when Ty Simpson escaped pressure in 11-on-11 drills and found Meadows over the middle for around a 15-yard gain.
The freshman also made a solid catch during 7-on-7s from Austin Mack.
Lotzeir Brooks
Brooks has been the recipient of plenty of hype throughout spring practice. On Saturday, he showed why.
The speedy New Jersey native was underthrown by Mack during the 7-on-7 portion of practice. He rallied and made an impressive catch, showing solid body control to go with his speed and quickness.
Brooks made other nice grabs during the practice, and gave Alabama’s second and third-team defensive backs fits. He could grow into a solid contributor for 2025 if he can keep building off of his spring performance.
Abduall Sanders
It didn’t look like Mack saw Sanders when he threw the pass late in Saturday’s practice. The throw went right to the freshman linebacker, who grabbed it for the interception, Mack’s second of the day.
Sanders was one of a few freshmen linebackers who worked in during the 11-on-11 drills, including Duke Johnson and Luke Metz. The entire group looked solid as they worked in, usually with the second-team defense.
Sanders was a four-star recruit according to the 247Sports composite rankings.
Jay Lindsey
Alabama is seriously thin at tight end right now. With multiple injured, Lindsey became the only scholarship player at the position currently on the roster.
As a result, he got the first-team reps at tight end on Saturday. Lindsey looked good, making a catch over the middle from Ty Simpson during 11-on-11 drills toward the end of practice.
Behind Lindsey, walk-on Peter Knudson got reps throughout the practice.
