5 first-round playoff games to watch involving Mobile-area teams

Here are five games to watch involving Mobile-area teams this week with the complete schedule following.

CLASS 7A: AUBURN (8-2) AT BAKER (8-2)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Hornets Stadium, Mobile

Last week: Defeated Smiths Station 49-8; Baker defeated Mountain Brook 37-28

The skinny: Auburn is the No. 3 seed from Region 2; Baker is the No. 2 seed from Region 1. … Auburn beat Baker in the first round of the playoffs in both 2020 and 2021, both of those games were at Auburn. … The Tigers’ losses came to Enterprise (17-16 on Sept. 1) and Central-Phenix City (41-20 on Oct. 20). Senior WR Ean Nation has 52 receptions for 511 yards and 6 TDs and has rushed for 88 yards and a TD on nine carries. He also is 4-of-4 passing for 46 yards. Sophomore RB Omar Mabson has rushed for 984 yards and 14 TDs on 133 carries. He also has 11 receptions for 126 yards. PK Towns McGough, who received an offer from South Alabama over the weekend, is 15-of-17 on field goals with his only misses coming from 62 and 60 yards. He’s 42-of-42 on extra points. Keith Etheredge is 30-7 in his third season as head coach of the Tigers. … Baker’s losses came to Dothan (35-14 on Sept. 29) and Mary G. Montgomery (35-14 on Oct. 13). The Hornets are 1-10 in playoff games. The only win came in 1984. Miss. State commit Josh Flowers has completed 68 percent of his passes for 1,952 yards and 19 TDs. He’s also rushed for 1,310 yards and 13 TDs on 150 carries. Rod Taylor has rushed for 995 yards and 8 TDs on 121 carries. The leading receivers are Auburn commit Bryce Cain (40 receptions, 881 yards, 15 TDs) and Troy commit Kevin Beckham Jr. (54 receptions, 807 yards, 4 TDs). Junior Quinterirus Robinson is the leading tackler with 98. … Baker has scored two more points than Auburn this season (340-338). The Tigers have given up 92 less on defense (157-249).

CLASS 3A: BAYSIDE ACADEMY (8-2) AT JACKSONVILLE (8-2)

Last week: Bayside Academy defeated Alabama Christian 35-7; Jacksonville lost to Oxford 36-7

The skinny: Bayside Academy is the No. 3 seed from Region 1; Jacksonville is the No. 2 seed from Region 4. … This will be the first meeting between the two teams. … Bayside’s only losses came in consecutive games to Jackson (35-0 on Sept. 22) and T.R. Miller (31-17 on Oct. 6). In addition to last week’s loss to Class 6A Oxford, Jacksonville’s other loss came at Handley (32-24) on Sept. 8. … The Golden Eagles are led by QB Jim Ogle and WR Ky’Dric Fisher. Ogle is 158-of-233 for 2,567 yards and 36 TDs. He’s been intercepted five times. Fisher has 1,129 yards receiving and 16 TDs. … Bayside QB Sammy Dunn has completed 113-of-155 passes for 1,685 yards and 17 TDs. Damien Tate has rushed for 902 yards on 79 carries. Teague Broadhead has 617 yards and 7 TDs on 70 carries. … Jacksonville is averaging 45 points a game. Bayside is averaging 30. Jacksonville coach Clint Smith is 97-41 in 12 years at the school. His team is making its 11th straight trip to the postseason. They’ve won at least one playoff game in all but two of those seasons. Former Auburn QB Barrett Trotter is in his first year at Bayside Academy. The Admirals are in the playoffs for the fifth straight year, but they are just 1-4 in that span.

The skinny: Dothan’s only losses came Sept. 8 vs. Auburn (28-27, 2 OTs) and Oct. 6 at No. 1-ranked Central-Phenix City (48-14). … This will be the Wolves’ second trip to the Mobile area this season. They defeated Baker 35-14 on Sept. 29. Coincidentally, MGM defeated Baker by that same score two weeks later. … Dothan is the No. 4 seed from Region 2; MGM is the top seed from Region 1. … The Wolves’ single-wing offensive attack is led by senior Tamarion Peterson (134 carries, 928 yards, 18 TDs) and freshman AJ Alexander (124 carries, 1,044 yards, 11 TDs). Sophomore QB Sam Broadaway has thrown for 711 yards and 6 TDs and rushed for 3 TDs. The Wolves have scored 418 points and allowed 194. … MGM has scored 372 points and allowed just 81 in its first undefeated season since 1965. The Vikings have never won a playoff game (0-8). South Alabama QB commit Jared Hollins is completing 70 percent of his passes for 2,395 yards and 29 TDs. He’s been intercepted just twice. He also has rushed for 384 yards and 8 TDs. Senior WR James Bolton has 40 receptions for 801 yards and 12 TDs. Senior John Robinson leads the defense with 83 tackles.

CLASS 6A: THEODORE (7-3) AT HUEYTOWN (7-3)

Last week: Theodore defeated St. Paul’s 20-10; Hueytown defeated Gardendale 47-28

The skinny: Theodore’s losses came against Baker (36-20), Spanish Fort (8-3) and Saraland (42-13). Hueytown’s losses came against Ramsay (28-14), Clay-Chalkville (17-3) and Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa (35-6). The Gophers have won six straight since their only loss. Theodore has won four of its last five. … Steve Mask is in his first year as head coach at Theodore. He has a 218-110 overall record in 27 yards. Greg Patterson is 44-17 in his fifth year at Hueytown. The teams matched up in the second round of the playoffs a year ago with Theodore winning 29-18. … Hueytown is led by RB/WR Jakhael Rowser, QB Jebron Ellington, WR Dacorian Thomas and RB Elijah Hudson on offense and DL Keith Green and Kole Caldwell, LB Jacob Hanberry and DB Kam Kynard on defense. …. Theodore is led by RBs Navontay Richardson and Braxton Clark, QB Crishon Overton and WR Cam Rigby on offense and DL Kevin Norwood and LB Bobby Pruitt on defense.

The skinny: First meeting between the two teams. … UMS’ four losses came to St. Paul’s (14-7), Gulf Shores (17-0), B.C. Rain (31-21) and Faith Academy (21-13). The Bulldogs received a forfeit victory over Vigor. … UMS is in the playoffs for the 25th year under head coach Terry Curtis and the 30th straight year overall. The Bulldogs have lost a first-round game just once under Curtis (2010). Curtis is the AHSAA’s all-time leader in victories with 354. Central-Clay County’s Danny Horn is second and closing fast with 351. They both have won eight state titles. … UMS has scored just 178 points this year, while giving up 166. Central has scored 400 points and given up just 73. The Volunteers’ closest game was a 16-point win over Russell County (30-14) on Oct. 27. … Horn is 64-13 in six years back at Central-Clay County. He led the team to state titles in both 2018 and 2019.
