5 Coastal Alabama HS football games to watch in Week 4
The annual clash between perennial Class 6A state title contenders Spanish Fort and Saraland highlights this week’s Coastal Alabama high school football schedule.
Here are five games to watch along with the complete Coastal schedule.
JACKSON (2-0) AT T.R. MILLER (2-1)
Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Municipal Stadium, Brewton
Last week: Jackson defeated Orange Beach 50-2. T.R. Miller defeated Wilcox Central 47-12.
Region records: Both teams are 1-0 in Class 4A, Region 1
The skinny: T.R. Miller leads the overall series 18-10. The Tigers won 32-29 a year ago. … Jackson has outscored its first two opponents 85-9. Last week, South Carolina QB commit Landon Duckworth threw for 201 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 93 yards and a score on just three carries. Duckworth has completed 30-of-45 passes for 520 yards and 8 touchdowns this season. He’s been intercepted once. EJ Crowell rushed for 127 yards and a TD on 12 carries last week. Keeyun Red Chapman had a pair of TD receptions and Nasir Powell and JR Payne had one each. The Aggie defense held Orange Beach to just four first downs. … T.R. Miller started the season by splitting two close decisions. The Tigers beat Hillcrest-Evergreen 26-20 in OT before losing to Class 5A UMS-Wright 16-14. Last week, they routed Wilcox Central. QB Nathan Commander is 37-of-56 overall for 375 yards and four touchdowns. Kavarius Bell (9 receptions, 131 yards, 2 TDs) is the leading receiver. Takyi Askew (35 carries, 300 yards, 4 TDs) is the leading rusher. Bell leads the defense with 40 tackles. Eli Hubbert has 34 tackles and an interception.
MARY G. MONTGOMERY (3-0) AT FAIRHOPE (1-2)
Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Volanta Park, Fairhope
Last week: MGM defeated Foley 28-7; Fairhope lost to Pensacola Catholic 24-10.
Region records: Mary G. Montgomery is 1-0 in Class 7A, Region 1. Fairhope is playing its first region game.
The skinny: Fairhope leads the overall series 39-13 and has won the last six and 11 of the last 12. The Vikings’ last win over Fairhope was a 17-14 decision in 2016. The Pirates won 38-23 in Semmes last year. … MGM is 3-0 for the first time since 2007. The Vikings led Foley 28-0 at the half last week. Troy Flowers ran for 127 yards on 16 carries. South Alabama QB commit Jared Hollins threw a pair of TD passes, and linebacker Devin Pettway returned an interception 43 yards for a score. … Fairhope is coming off back-to-back losses to Florida teams after winning at Spanish Fort to start the season. The Pirates lost at Choctawhatchee, Fla., 33-13 on Sept. 1 and at home against Pensacola Catholic last week. Tim Carter is 55-34 in his ninth year at Fairhope and 153-87 in 22 years overall.
SARALAND (3-0) AT SPANISH FORT (2-1)
Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Toro Stadium, Spanish Fort
Last week: Saraland defeated St. Paul’s 47-3. Spanish Fort defeated Baldwin County 14-13.
Region records: Both teams are 2-0 in Class 6A, Region 1.
The skinny: Spanish Fort leads the overall series 8-4, but Saraland has won the last two games between the teams – 28-16 in 2021 and 35-24 in 2022. … The Spartans have outscored their three opponents 132-39, including 101-9 in their first two region games against Murphy and St. Paul’s. Jeff Kelly’s team has won 17 of the last 18 games overall with the only loss coming at Theodore in the regular season a year ago. The Spartans have averaged 43 points a game during that span and been held to less than 30 points just twice, both times against Theodore (21, 26). Junior KJ Lacey is completing 62 percent of his passes for 576 yards and 5 TDs. The leading rushers are Deshawn Spencer (14 carries, 243 yards, 2 TDs) and Santae McWilliams (30 carries, 171 yards, 1 TD). Reigning Mr. Football Ryan Williams has 10 receptions for 224 yards and 3 TDs. He also has a rushing score. … Spanish Fort has won two straight games since opening the season with a 17-14 loss to Fairhope. The Toros defeated Blount 44-0 on Sept. 1 before edging Baldwin County last week. Drew Williamson (3), Anthony Shamburger (2) and Sawyer Wilson (2) have combined for seven rushing scores. Shamburger has thrown just one TD pass and been intercepted twice. The defense, which is allowing just 10 points a game, is led by linebackers Bishop Burkhalter (32 tackles), Cole McConathy (31 tackles) and Sterling Dixon (32 tackles). McConathy, a Louisville commit, has seven sacks. Dixon has three.
UMS-WRIGHT (2-1) AT GULF SHORES (3-0)
Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium, Gulf Shores
Last week: UMS-Wright beat LeFlore 13-6; Gulf Shores defeated Faith Academy 31-16.
Region records: UMS is 1-0 in Class 5A, Region 1; Gulf Shores is 2-0.
The skinny: Gulf Shores has never beaten UMS-Wright (0 for 7). The Bulldogs won 35-28 last year. It marked the first game between the two teams since 2007. … UMS is averaging just 12 points a game through three weeks, while giving up 11. QB Joe Lott has passed for 164 yards and run for 249 and 3 TDs. Bo Wills has rushed for 232 yards on 47 carries. The defense is led by Caplyn Reed (27 tackles, 1 INT) and Jeff Holston (24 tackles, 2 TFL). Terry Curtis is the AHSAA’s all-time leader in victories (350-94 in 35 years). … The Dolphins have outscored their three opponents 103-36, winning each game by at least two touchdowns. Kolin Wilson and Ronnie Royal combined for 179 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns in last week’s win. Wilson has 473 yards and 6 TDs in three games. Royal has 219 and 3 TDs. QB Jud Harris threw a 6-yard TD pass to Isaiah Hammac last week. The defense intercepted Faith QB Jarrett Daughtry three times. Coach Mark Hudspeth said this week that three defensive players suspended for last week’s game due to a violation of team rules (defensive back/wide receiver Braden Jackson, defensive back Carter Byrd and linebacker Jamichael Garrett) would return this week.
VIGOR (3-0) AT WILLIAMSON (2-1)
Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Ladd-Peebles Stadium, Mobile
Last week: Vigor defeated Citronelle 34-28 in overtime; Williamson defeated Elberta 39-12.
Region records: Both teams are 2-0 in 5A, Region 1.
The skinny: Vigor leads the overall series 23-9 and has won the last three meetings. The Wolves won 6-0 last year. … Last week, Vigor scored 27 unanswered points in rallying to beat Citronelle at home. Carlos Benjamin rushed for 198 yards and four touchdowns on 14 carries, including a 99-yarder. For the season, he has 490 yards and 7 TDs. Brandon Purifoy led the defense with 11 tackles, three tackles for a loss, a sack and an interception. For the season, leads the team in tackles with 37, tackles for a loss with 6 and sacks with 2. … For Williamson last week, Willie Maddox rushed for 150 yards and a pair of scores at Elberta. Keith Donald had three receptions for 140 yards and a TD. Ellis McGaskin had a touchdown and also led the defense with 12 tackles. Kiyante Pettway also scored.
