5 Coastal Alabama HS football games to watch in Week 2

Region play begins for Class 5A and 6A teams as we head into Week 2 of the season.

Here are five games to watch involving Coastal Alabama teams along with the complete Coastal schedule.

B.C. RAIN (1-0) AT VIGOR (1-0)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Vigor Stadium

Last week: B.C. Rain defeated Excel 34-14 in the first official game at the Red Raiders’ new on-campus stadium. Vigor defeated Blount 26-6 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in the “Battle of Prichard.”

The skinny: Vigor will play its first official game at its new on-campus stadium. The Wolves hosted McGill-Toolen on campus in a spring game. … B.C. Rain beat Vigor at Ladd 20-7 a year ago. Bryce Dowdlan ran for 259 yards on 25 carries for the Red Raiders in a key 5A, Region 1 win. … In last week’s win over Excel, Amari Yelding threw four touchdown passes and ran for another. … In beating Blount for a fourth straight time, Vigor got 169 yards rushing and a touchdown on 16 carries from junior Carlos Benjamin. The defense, which didn’t allow a score until the final minutes, was led by Brandon Purifoy (16 tackles, 3 TFL, 1 sack, 2 PBU) and Devin Whitsett (7 tackles, 2 sacks). … Vigor leads the overall series 7-4.

BLOUNT (0-1) AT SPANISH FORT (0-1)

Time/Location: 7 p.m. Friday, Toro Stadium, Spanish Fort

Last week: Blount lost at Vigor 26-6. Spanish Fort lost at home to Fairhope 17-14.

The skinny: Both teams will look to rebound from last week’s season-opening losses as they start Class 6A, Region 1 play. Spanish Fort leads the overall series 8-2 and has won four straight over the Leopards and six of the last seven. … Theodore QB legend Ray Nelson is in his first season as head coach at Blount. QB Roderick Taldon threw a late TD pass against Vigor to avoid the shutout for his team. … Spanish Fort led Class 7A Fairhope 14-3 in the fourth quarter last week before the Pirates rallied. The Toros ran for 199 yards on 40 carries, led by Nemo Hixon (73 yards, 10 carries) and Sawyer Wilson (64 yards, 12 carries). The defense is anchored by Louisville commit Cole McConathy on the edge and Alabama commit Sterling Dixon inside.

MARY G. MONTGOMERY (1-0) AT CHARLES HENDERSON (0-0)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Thursday, Memorial Stadium, Troy

Last week: Mary G. Montgomery defeated Williamson 41-2. Charles Henderson defeated Pike County 48-7 in a jamboree game.

The skinny: Charles Henderson scored with 45 seconds remaining a year ago to beat MGM 24-20. South Alabama commit Jared Hollins threw for 291 yards and a pair of scores in the loss. The Trojans went on to the Class 5A championship game. … MGM, which lost its first four games a year ago, got off to an impressive start against Williamson last week. Hollins was 9-of-11 for 318 yards and 2 TDs. He also ran for 73 yards and 2 scores. Troy Flowers rushed for 61 yards and a TD on 10 carries and had 2 receptions for 112 yards and a TD. The Vikings haven’t started a season 2-0 since 2007. … In Charles Henderson’s jamboree, Parker Adams passed for 239 yards and 4 TDs. Jywon Boyd caught 3 TD passes and Noah Green had 2.

MCGILL-TOOLEN (0-1) AT ST. PAUL’S (1-0)

Time/Location: 7 p.m. Friday, E.E Delaney Stadium, Mobile

Last week: McGill-Toolen lost to Montgomery Catholic 21-0. St. Paul’s defeated UMS-Wright 14-7.

The skinny: St. Paul’s defeated McGill-Toolen 16-3 a year ago in a win that was crucial in lifting the Saints into the Class 6A playoffs. … Last week, sophomore Anthony Fraiser ran for 119 yards and a TD as St. Paul’s held off rival UMS. Braxton Byrd threw a TD pass to Anthony Jones to open the scoring. Kenny Johnson’s late interception sealed the win. St. Paul’s coach Ham Barnett is a McGill-Toolen graduate. … McGill coach David Faulkner lost his first game as the Jackets’ head coach last week. McGill has now lost four straight season-openers dating back to a 37-7 win at Spanish Fort on Aug. 23, 2019.

UMS-WRIGHT (0-1) AT T.R. MILLER (1-0)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Municipal Stadium, Brewton

Last week: UMS-Wright lost at home to St. Paul’s. T.R. Miller defeated Hillcrest-Evergreen 26-20 in overtime.

The skinny: UMS won 34-14 in 2022 in Mobile, marking the Bulldogs’ sixth straight win in the series. The teams have split 32 games against each other, the first of which was played in 1927. … Joe Lott had a 72-yard TD run in the second half as UMS tried to rally against rival St. Paul’s after having just three first-half first downs. Coach Terry Curtis is the state’s all-time wins leader with 348. … Nathan Commander’s 5-yard TD pass to Kavarius Bell in OT lifted T.R. Miller to a win last week. Commander also threw a 7-yard TD pass to Demarcus Streety and Takyi Askew rushed for 191 yards and a TD on 18 carries for the Tigers. Brent Hubbert is 39-13 in his fifth season at T.R. Miller and 222-54 in 23 years as a head coach overall.
