5 Coastal Alabama football games to watch in Week 5

Two of the top quarterbacks on the Gulf Coast oppose each other this week as Mississippi State commit Josh Flowers and Baker host newcomer Jamar Malone and Daphne in a key Class 7A, Region 1 game.

Malone transferred from IMG Academy earlier this year.

Here are five games to watch in Coastal Alabama in Week 5 along with the complete schedule.

BAYSIDE ACADEMY (4-0) AT JACKSON (3-0)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Legion Field, Jackson

Last week: Bayside Academy defeated Wilcox Central 41-19; Jackson defeated T.R. Miller 38-7

Region standings: Both teams are 2-0 in Class 4A, Region 1

The skinny: Jackson defeated Bayside 30-10 a year ago in the first meeting between the two teams. … Bayside, under first-year coach Barrett Trotter, is 4-0 for the second straight season and third time in four years. In 2022, the Admirals lost their next three games before rallying to make the postseason. Sophomore QB Sammy Dunn is completing 78 percent of his passes for 791 yards and 11 TDs. The team’s leading rushers are sophomore Damien Tate (41 carries, 353 yards, 1 TD) and senior Teague Broadhead (20 carries, 186 yards, 3 TDs). Tait Moore (11 receptions, 214 yards, 4 TDs) is the leading receiver. Broadhead also leads the defense with 45 tackles. … Jackson has outscored its three opponents 123-16. Sophomore QB Landon Duckworth, a South Carolina commit, is completing 66 percent of his passes for 699 yards and 10 TDs. He’s been intercepted just once. Freshman Ezavier Crowell has rushed for 334 yards and 3 touchdowns on 33 carries. Nasir Powell (288 yards, 4 TDs), Junior Payne (185 yards, 2 TDs) and Keeyun Chapman (110 yards, 3 TDs) are the leading receivers.

DAPHNE (3-1) AT BAKER (4-0)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Hornet Stadium, Mobile

Last week: Daphne defeated Davidson 56-14; Baker defeated Foley 51-44

Region standings: Both teams are 2-0 in Class 7A, Region 1

The skinny: Daphne leads the overall series 10-1 and won last year’s game 25-14. … Daphne is 2-0 with IMG transfer Jamar Malone as the starting quarterback. The Trojans are averaging 52.5 points in his two starts. In last week’s win at Davidson, Malone went 23-of-31 for 323 yards and 3 TDs. He also rushed for 48 yards and a pair of touchdowns on six carries. Jaecyn “Scoot” Myles had four receptions for 75 yards and 2 TDs and also had a 71-yard punt return for a touchdown. Kenny King is 49-31 in his eighth season at his alma mater. … Baker is 4-0 for the first time since 2014. The Hornets finished 9-2 that season with an overtime loss to Prattville in the first round of the playoffs. Mississippi State QB commit Josh Flowers is completing 69 percent of his passes for 936 yards and 9 TDs and has yet to throw an interception. He also has rushed for 377 yards and 6 TDs. Rod Taylor (418 yards, 7 TDs) is the leading rusher. Auburn commit Bryce Cain has 15 receptions for 412 yards and 7 scores, while Troy commit Kevin Beckham Jr. has 20 receptions for 367 yards and 2 TDs. The Hornets are averaging 46.5 points a game, while giving up 27. Steve Normand is 25-21 in his fifth year as head coach.

SPANISH FORT (2-2) AT THEODORE (3-1)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, C.A. Douglas Field, Theodore

Last week: Spanish Fort lost to Saraland 49-7; Theodore defeated Baldwin County 27-24 in overtime.

Region standings: Theodore is 3-0 in Class 6A, Region 1; Spanish Fort is 2-1.

The skinny: Theodore won the first meeting between the two teams 29-21 at Spanish Fort last year. … The Toros are coming off the second largest margin of defeat in program history. Only a 57-7 loss to McGill-Toolen in 2007 was worse than the 42-point home loss to Saraland. … Sawyer Wilson (313 yards, 2 TDs) and Drew Williamson (263 yards, 3 TDs) are the team’s leading rushers. QB Aaden Shamburger has thrown just one TD pass and been intercepted twice. The defense is led by Louisville commit Cole McConathy (38 tackles, 11 TFL, 7 sacks), Bishop Burkhalter (43 tackles, 5 TFL) and Sterling Dixon (53 tackles, 7 TFL, 3 sacks). Dixon returned a fumble for a touchdown last week for Spanish Fort’s only score. … Theodore has won three straight since an opening-season loss at undefeated Baker. Last week, Cam Rigby scored the game-winning TD on a 2-yard run in overtime. Braxton Clark scored three touchdowns and rushed for more than 200 yards as the Bobcats rallied from a 14-7 halftime deficit. Steve Mask is 214-108 in his 27th year as a head coach. … Theodore will dedicate and name its field house for former coach Joe Downey at the game. Downey won 101 games in 15 years as the team’s head coach from 1987-2001).

SATSUMA (3-1) AT ST. MICHAEL (2-2)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Thursday, Volanta Park, Fairhope

Last week: Satsuma defeated Orange Beach 17-15; St. Michael defeated Escambia County 41-26.

Region standings: Both teams are 1-1 in Class 4A, Region 1

The skinny: St. Michael won the first meeting between the teams 45-8 in 2022. … Satsuma is off to its best on-the-field start since 2014. The Gators also were 3-1 in 2020, but that included a forfeit win over B.C. Rain during the COVID year. … QB Randal Barfoot is completing 57 percent of his passes for 576 yards and 6 TDs. He’s been intercepted 4 times. Zak Lamar is the team’s leading rusher with 365 yards and 3 TDs on 73 carries. Brayden Williams (20 receptions, 297 yards, 4 TDs) is the team’s leading receiver. The defense is led by Kennedy “KJ” Austin (41 tackles) and Tristen Abrams (33 tackles, 8 TFL, 2 sacks). … For St. Michael, freshman QB Gunner Rivers is 96-of-151 for 1,164 yards and 13 TDs already. He’s been intercepted just twice. Noah Moss and Nick Russo both have rushed for 246 yards to balance the attack. The leading receivers are Tucker Tomlinson (31 receptions, 471 yards, 3 TDs) and Brody Jones (18 receptions, 285 yards, 4 TDs).

UMS-WRIGHT (2-2) AT VIGOR (4-0)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Vigor Stadium, Prichard

Last week: UMS-Wright lost at Gulf Shores 17-0; Vigor defeated Williamson 12-0.

Region standings: Vigor is 3-0 in Class 5A, Region 1; UMS is 1-1.

The skinny: UMS won last year’s game 10-7. This is just the fourth meeting between the two schools. … The UMS offense is averaging just 9 points through four games with a high of 16 in a win over T.R. Miller. The defense is allowing just 12.7. A loss Friday would give UMS three losses in its first five games for the first time since the Bulldogs started the 2007 season with losses to McGill, Vigor and St. Paul’s. … QB Joe Lott has rushed for 243 yards and 3 TDs. He is completing 55 percent of his passes (21-of-38). Junior Bo Wills has rushed for 234 yards on 51 carries. Jeff Holston and Caplyn Reed are the leading tacklers on defense with 40 each. … Vigor is coming off a shutout win over Williamson and has allowed a total of just 52 points in four games. Brandon Purifoy recorded 15 tackles last week and returned a fumble for a touchdown. Purifoy, a Mississippi Valley State commit, has 52 tackles, 3 interceptions, 2 fumble recoveries and 9 tackles for a loss through four games. The offense is led by junior Carlos Benjamin, who has rushed for 571 yards and 7 TDs on 62 carries. South Alabama commit Jerrian Graham continues to be a versatile weapon on offense for the Wolves. He has completed 18-of-26 passes for 205 yards and 2 TDs, rushed for 166 yards on 20 carries and caught two passes for 29 yards.
