5 Coastal Alabama football games to watch in Round 1

Here are five playoff games involving Coastal Alabama teams to watch this week.

CLASS 7A: DOTHAN (7-3) AT FOLEY (7-3)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Ivan Jones Stadium, Foley

Last week: Dothan defeated Jeff Davis 41-12; Foley defeated Jackson-Olin 28-12

The skinny: Dothan is the No. 4 seed from Region 2; Foley is the top seed from Region 1. … The Wolves are in the playoffs for the first time since 2019. They finished tied with Enterprise in the Region 2 standings at 5-3, but Enterprise earned the No. 3 seed by virtue of its head-to-head win. In last week’s win at Jeff Davis, the Wolves rushed for 325 yards, including 166 by Tamarion Peterson. The defense allowed just 152 yards and got an interception return for a touchdown by TK Knight. Dothan first-year head coach Jed Kennedy is scheduled to return to the sidelines after a one-week suspension for shoving a Wolves’ volunteer assistant coach. … Foley finished the season with 5 straight wins to earn its first playoff trip since 2015. The Lions won a region championship for the first time since 2007. In last week’s win, Reece Tynes threw a pair of TD passes and ran for another. He was 21-of-34 for 233 yards and had TD passes to Harrison Knight and Makai Mitchell. Tynes has thrown for 2,153 yards and 21 TDs this season. Alabama WR commit Perry Thompson caught 7 passes for 69 yards in the win and intercepted a pass. For the season, Thompson has 78 receptions for 913 yards and 10 TDs. RB Kolton Nero has rushed for 1,017 yards and 13 TDs on 151 carries.

CLASS 7A: FAIRHOPE (8-2) AT AUBURN (9-1)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Duck Samford Stadium, Auburn

Last week: Fairhope defeated Briarwood Christian 44-22; Auburn defeated Smiths Station 63-0

The skinny: The two teams have played just twice before, both times in first-round playoff games. Fairhope won 43-42 in 2011. Auburn won 34-23 in 2018. … Fairhope coach Tim Carter spent nine years as head coach at Auburn, going 84-25 and leading the Tigers to the 2013 Class 6A title game. In eight years at Fairhope, he is 54-31. His team is making its sixth straight playoff appearance. The Pirates are looking for their first postseason win since 2014. … Fairhope QB Caden Creel was nearly perfect in last week’s road win over Briarwood. He completed 28-of-30 pass attempts for 179 yards and 2 TDs and rushed for 152 yards and a score on 22 carries. For the season, the senior has completed 66 percent of his passes for 1,689 yards and 11 TDs. He’s also rushed for 1,059 yards and 10 TDs. Qualin McCants has rushed for 15 TDs and Preston Godfrey 9. Ben Moseley (674 yards, 4 TDs) is the team’s leading receiver. … Auburn’s only loss was a 38-17 setback at region rival Central-Phenix City on Oct. 14. Since then, the Tigers have ripped off wins at Prattville (37-29) and vs. Smiths Station (63-0). Keith Etheredge is 19-4 in his second season at Auburn and 169-56 overall. He won 4 state titles in 10 years at Leeds and another in 2019 at Oxford. Auburn’s two quarterbacks, Clyde Pittman and Davis Harsin, have combined for 2,023 yards passing and 24 TDs. Both have completed better than 67 percent of their passes. Ean Nation (54 receptions, 756 yards, 8 TDs) needs five receptions to tie the Auburn single-season record for receptions. DV Williams has rushed for 830 yards and 12 TDs on 132 carries.

CLASS 5A: FAITH ACADEMY (8-2) AT EUFAULA (7-2)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Tigers Stadium, Eufaula

Last week: Faith Academy defeated LeFlore 61-6; Eufaula was idle

The skinny: The two teams have never played. … Faith Academy has outscored its opponents 343-68 this season. The Rams’ only losses came on the road to the top teams in Region 1, 22-12 at Gulf Shores and 21-20 at No. 1-ranked UMS-Wright. QB Jarrett Daughtry is completing 73 percent of his passes for 1,600 yards and 15 TDs. Ty Goodwill (545 yards, 6 TDs) and Dorian Smith (566 yards, 4 TDs) are his leading receivers. Christian Burnette has rushed for 713 yards and 11 TDs on 106 carries. Head coach Jack French is 44-15 in 5 years at Faith and 303-135-2 in 39 years overall. … Eufaula has won four of its last five games under first-year coach and former Tiger star Jerrell Jernigan. The team’s last win was two weeks ago when it defeated Early County, Ga., 31-28. The Tigers have scored 281 points this season and given up 201. Their losses came against Pike Road (16-10 in overtime) and Charles Henderson (34-7). Eufaula is led by Alabama DL commit Yhonzae Pierre. … The Tigers are making their 25th straight trip to the postseason. They last missed the playoffs in 1997.

CLASS 5A: HEADLAND (6-4) AT UMS-WRIGHT (10-0)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Cooper Stadium, Mobile

Last week: Headland defeated Cottonwood 53-26; UMS-Wright defeated LeFlore 17-8

The skinny: The teams have never played. … Headland won its last two games over New Brockton (34-14) and Cottonwood. The Rams scored 287 points this season and allowed 231. Reginald Melton is in his first full season as Headland’s head coach. The Rams are in the playoffs for the first time since 2018. The team went 10-2 that year and lost at Andalusia in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs. … UMS has been No. 1 since the first ASWA poll in August. Head coach Terry Curtis is tied with former Vestavia Hills coach Buddy Anderson for most wins in AHSAA coaching history (346). South Alabama commit Cole Blaylock has rushed for 1,461 yards and 19 TDs on 203 carries. He also had 3 TD receptions. Joe Lott has passed for 2 TDs, rushed for 6 TDs, caught a TD pass and has 5 interceptions. The defense is also led by John Charles Erwin with 107 tackles. … UMS-Wright has been eliminated before the quarterfinals just once (2016) since 2010 and just twice in Curtis’ 24-year tenure. The Bulldogs have won 8 state titles in Curtis’ tenure.

CLASS 6A: SPANISH FORT (7-3) AT PIKE ROAD (6-4)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Pike Road Stadium

Last week: Spanish Fort did not play; Pike Road defeated B.T. Washington 49-34

The skinny: The two teams have never played. … Spanish Fort finished the regular season on a five-game win streak after starting the year 2-3. The Toros have outscored the competition 310-207. Their losses came to three playoff teams – Fairhope (34-28), Saraland (35-24) and Theodore (29-21). A year ago, Spanish Fort lost at Opelika in the second round of the playoffs. It marked the first time in school history the team had lost prior to the state quarterfinals. Sawyer Wilson has rushed for 1,233 yards and 12 TDs on 141 carries. UAB commit Jake Godfrey had 749 yards rushing and 10 TDs and 555 yards receiving and 5 TDs. QB Brayden Walker has passed for 1,129 yards and 8 TDs. … Pike Road, in coach Ed Rigby’s first season, has outscored its competition 302-210. The Patriots’ losses came against Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa (28-21), Marist, Ga. (33-22), Stanhope Elmore (14-13) and Carver-Montgomery (22-19). Sophomore Anthony Rogers has rushed for 1,315 yards and 19 TDs on 138 carries. He also has a TD reception. QB Kaleb Foster is completing 59 percent of his passes for 771 yards and 8 TDs. He has rushed for 7 TDs. OT Vysen Lang is one of the state’s top uncommitted senior recruits. … Pike Road won the Class 5A state title last year before moving up to 6A this year.
