5 Birmingham-area high school games to watch for Week 11
Here are five games to watch in the Birmingham area for Week 11 – the final regular-season games of the season. Several games have been moved to Thursday night this week. The complete schedule follows.
VESTAVIA HILLS (5-4) AT HELENA (6-3)
Time/location: Thursday, 7 p.m., at Husky Stadium, Helena
Last week: Vestavia Hills beat Tuscaloosa County 59-18 in a home game; Helena lost 47-14 at home to Benjamin Russell.
The skinny: The Rebels will play Austin in Decatur next week to open the Class 7A playoffs as the No. 4 seed from Region 3. Austin is the top seed in Region 4. … Vestavia is 2-0 all-time against Helena, which is in its ninth year as a program. … Alumnus Robert Evans is in his first season as a head coach and is the third head coach in the past three years at Vestavia. … The Rebels score 33.7 points a game and surrender 19.9. … Junior QB John Paul Head threw 5 TDs passes last week and ran for 104 yards on 12 carries with a 63-yard scoring run. … Head has completed 98-of-174 passes for 1,262 yards and 13 TDs with 7 interceptions. … Five VHHS receivers have caught at least a dozen passes each, led by Keown Richardson’s 32 for 386 yards and 5 TDs. … Head has run for 851 yards on 114 carries and 16 scores, all team-highs. … William Tonsmierer has 98 attempts for 494 yards. … Carter Shirley has made 5-of-6 field goals and is perfect on 37 PAT kicks. … DE Jordan Ross has 36.5 tackles with 16 tackles for a loss. … LB John Martin Richter has 32.5 tackles and Grant Downey leads the team with 5 interceptions. … The Huskies just missed the playoffs with a 3-3 record. Calera got the No. 4 seed with a 4-overtime 52-51 win over Helena two weeks ago. … Richie Busby is 35-18 in his fifth season at Helena. He is 75-35 in his 10-year career that started at Fultondale. … The Huskies won two overtime games in back-to-back weeks at Chilton County (35-28) and against Pelham (31-24). … Helena also won games by 3 and 10 points and lost one by 9. … The Huskies scored 30.7 points per game and allowed 25.8.
HUEYTOWN (6-3) AT GARDENDALE (7-2)
Time/location: Thursday, 7 p.m., Driver Stadium, Gardendale
Last week: Hueytown beat Central-Tuscaloosa 68-0 at home; Gardendale beat Mountain Brook 29-28 on the road.
The skinny: Hueytown finished second in Class 6A, Region 4 and will host Benjamin Russell in the opening round of the playoffs next week. … The Gophers, who finished second in 6A last season, have scored 46.9 points per game this year while allowing 25.3. … Greg Patterson is 35-13 in his fourth season at Hueytown. His first head coaching job was at Sumiton Christian for four years. Patterson’s career record is 49-39. … Jacksonville State commitment QB Earl Woods was Alabama’s Gatorade Football Player of the Year last season after rolling up 5,195 total yards, the second-best season in AHSAA history behind only last season’s total of 5,342 from Southside-Selma’s Christopher Thomas. … Woods has passed for 1,441 yards and 17 touchdowns this season. He has been intercepted 5 times and sacked just 3 times. Woods also leads the Gophers with 793 yards rushing and 15 TDs. … In a 41-23 win over now 6-3 Northridge, RB Jakhael Rowser ran for 250 yards and a TD and had a 99-yard kickoff return for a score. He is second on the squad with 776 yards with 7 touchdowns. Rowser also is the top receiver for Hueytown with 27 catches for 553 yards and 5 scores. … Senior LB Noah Eskridge leads the team with 22 tackles in 6 games. … Ninth-ranked Gardendale won the 6A Region 5 title with the win over Mountain Brook to finish 6-0 in league play. The Rockets will host Oxford next week in the playoff opener. … Chad Eads is 40-18 in his fifth season at Gardendale. … Senior QB Tyler Nelson ran for 303 yards last week, scored all four TDs for the Rockets and walked in behind some excellent blocking for the 2-point conversion with 19 seconds left to seal the win. … Nelson has 1,458 yards rushing and 1,003 passing this season. … Kedrick Story has 460 yards on 85 rushing attempts. … The offensive linemen, from left tackle to right, are Rhett Fitzpatrick, Anthony King, Lawson Hughes, Gage Beyke, Aiden Bulloch – the only senior. Fitzpatrick and Beyke are sophomores. … Carter Jenkins (10.4 yards per catch), Jonathan Harris (10.8) and Jacoby Quates (10.6) lead the Rockets in receiving. … Senior PK Kyle Norris is 5-of-7 on field goals, with a long of 36 yards, and has hit 29-of-31 PATs. … Florida commitment Kelby Collins has 10 sacks among his 84 tackles. … Caiden Combs has 88 tackles, 12.5 TFL.
MOUNTAIN BROOK (7-2) AT BAKER (5-4)

Last week: Mountain Brook lost 29-28 to Gardendale; Baker beat Fairhope 42-10.
The skinny: Fifth-ranked Mountain Brook finished second in Class 6A, Region 5 and will host Pinson Valley next week to open the playoffs. … The Spartans and Hornets have never played. … Mountain Brook lost two of its last four games – to Hoover and Gardendale – after starting the season 5-0. … Chris Yeager (140-60 in his 17th year at Mountain Brook, 165-80 in his 21st season overall) has led the Spartans to the 6A semifinals three times, including 2020 and 2021. … Mountain Brook has scored 345 points this season and surrendered 123. … The Spartans led Gardendale 28-14 in the third quarter on a pair of Mac Palmer interception returns for touchdowns before the Rockets rallied. … Baker finished 4-2 in Class 7A, Region 1 and is the second seed. … Baker won its way into the playoffs last week with a dominating win at Fairhope. The Hornets went from the outside looking in to the No. 2 seed and a home game. … Junior QB Josh Flowers passed for two scores and ran for another in the victory. … The Hornet defense intercepted Fairhope QB Caden Creel three times and held the Pirates to their lowest point total of the season. … Baker is in the playoffs for the third straight year under head coach Steve Normand, who is 21-19 in his fourth season. … The Hornets haven’t won a playoff game since 1984.
CALERA (4-5) AT McADORY (5-4)

Last week: Calera lost 24-20 to Gadsden City; McAdory lost 35-14 at home to Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa.
The skinny: Calera will travel to Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa as the No. 4 seed in Class 6A, Region 3 to open the playoffs next week. … Jason Hamlin is 11-9 in two years as a head coach, both at Calera. … The Eagles were 7-4 last season with a first-round playoff loss. It was Calera’s first playoff game since 2017, when the Eagles finished 7-5 with a 1-1 mark in the postseason. … The Eagles scored 24.3 points per game this season and allowed 26.6. … Calera won back-to-back overtime games, a 2OT 31-28 win over Briarwood and a 4OT win over Helena, 52-51. … McAdory, the fourth seed in Class 6A, Region 4, plays at Homewood next week in the first round of the playoffs. … Aryvia Holmes is 12-8 in his second season as a head coach, both at McAdory. … The Yellow Jackets scored 30.8 points per game and allowed 17.2. … McAdory won four of its first five games, but lost two straight road region games at No. 3 seed Northridge and No. 2 seed Hueytown. Hillcrest is the No. 1 seed from Region 4. … Last week, junior QB Jacob Clopton had a 32-yard touchdown pass to fellow junior Jacorey Whitted and senior Rod Thomas scored on an 8-yard run. … Clopton had 73 yards rushing and 68 yards passing in the loss. … Clopton has thrown for 1,130 yards and 12 touchdowns with 5 interceptions this season. … Tavares Coles (17-294, 4 TDs) and Whitted (17-259, 3 TDs) are the top receivers. … Rod Thomas leads the Yellow Jackets on the ground with 639 yards on 111 attempts.
HOMEWOOD (7-2) AT JASPER (5-4)
Time/location: Friday, 7 p.m., Ki-Ro/Gambrell Field, Jasper
Last week: Homewood beat Briarwood 34-10 at home; Jasper lost 45-14 at home to Pleasant Grove.
The skinny: The Patriots are the Class 6A, Region 3 champions and will host McAdory next week in the first round of the playoffs. … Homewood is scoring 27.4 points a game and allowing 19.2. … Homewood’s losses this season were at 7A Vestavia Hills (35-0) and to Pinson Valley (21-13). … Ben Berguson is 67-37 in his ninth year at Homewood, 75-43 overall with one season at Spain Park. … Last week, senior QB Woods Ray threw for 302 yards and 4 TDs, completing 22-of-28 passes. He had 240 passing yards in the first half. … Ray has thrown for 1,741 yards and 15 TDs this season and also leads the team with 424 rushing yards with 6 TDs. … Sophomore Calyb Colbert is second with 372 yards with 5 scores. … Senior Jackson Parris has 47 catches for 769 yards and 5 TDs. … Sophomore LB Talton Thomas is the Patriots’ top tackler with 75, including 3.5 sacks. … Coach Philip Bailey is 13-16 in his third year with the 5A Vikings, who were third in Region 5 with a 5-3 mark.
