5 Birmingham area football games to watch in Week 4

Here are five games to watch in the Birmingham area this week as region play continues.

CENTER POINT (3-0) AT PELL CITY (0-3)

Time/location: Friday, 7 p.m., Pete Rich-Alumni Stadium, Pell City

Last week: Center Point beat Huffman 58-0 and Pell City lost 47-7 to Clay-Chalkville.

The skinny: Center Point leads the limited series 3-2, including a 56-10 win in 2022. Neither Class 6A, Region 6 team is ranked. Center Point averages 36 points a game and allows only 10.7 while Pell City scores 18 points and gives up 34.7. Center Point coach George Bates (82-59, 12 years) is in his sixth season with the Eagles where he’s 43-20 with playoff appearances each of the past five seasons. Pell City’s Rush Propst (295-111, 32 years) has five state championships at Hoover (110-16, 9 years) and two at Colquitt County, Ga., (119-35, 11 years). It’s his first season at Pell City.

CENTER POINT players to watch: Offense — QB Deon Moore, RB Julius Finnerson, OL Jaylyn Rainey, WR Antonio Garfield, WR Jaquoryae Busy. Defense — LB Terrence Tubbs, LB Malik Brown, LB Kaleb Parker Holt, CB Torey Page, DB Cameron Bonner.

PELL CITY players to watch: Offense — ATH Caleb Groce, OL Michael Snow, RB Markise Bedford, OL Caden Aldridge, QB Nikita Getmanshchuk. Defense — DE Hunter Otwell, DB LJ Berry, DB JJ Johnson, LB DJ Verges, LB Jachian Dunnaville.

CHILTON COUNTY (1-2) AT HELENA (3-0)

Time/location: Friday, 7 p.m., Husky Stadium, Helena

Last week: Chilton County lost 28-10 to Briarwood while Helena beat Homewood 31-17.

The skinny: Helena has won all five games in the series, including 35-28 last season. Neither Class 6A, Region 3 team is ranked although Helena was among the top 15 in the last week’s poll. Chilton County averages 26 points per game while allowing 27.3 and Helena scores 45.3 and surrenders 12.7 points a game. Chilton County coach Marvin Morton (10-14, 3 years) is in his third season, two at Chilton County while Helena’s Richie Busby (78-36, 11 years) is in his sixth season at Helena (38-19) with three playoff appearances.

CHILTON COUNTY players to watch: Offense — QB Logan Coppedge, RB DJ Jackson, TE Hunter Ousley, K Jorge Castillo. Defense — DE Dantae Franklin, 4-star LB Demarcus Riddick (Auburn commit, flip from Georgia), 3-star LB DJ Caffey (Wright State offer), DB Justin Godwin.

HELENA players to watch: Offense — 3-star RB Jordan Washington (offers from UAB, Memphis, Tulane, more), WR/Return specialist Hunter Hale, WR Torrey Ward, QB Carson Acker, OL Reece Mims, OL Grant Vines. Defense — LB Joseph Roberto (offers from Maryland, UAB, Washington State, more), 3-star LB Nathan Thomason (Memphis commit), DL Parker Copeland, DB JT Alvis (offers from Mississippi State, Missouri, Penn State, more), DB Kevin Pinkard.

HOOVER (1-2) AT VESTAVIA HILLS (2-1)

Time/location: Friday, 7 p.m., Buddy Anderson Field at Reynolds Stadium, Vestavia Hills

Last week: Hoover beat Spain Park 28-20 and Vestavia Hills lost to No. 1 Thompson 21-3.

The skinny: Hoover leads the series 38-20, including last year’s 20-24 victory, and has won seven straight. Hoover was ranked No. 10 in last week’s Class 7A poll while Vestavia Hills was No. 4. Hoover scores 21 points a game and surrenders 29 while Vestavia Hills scores 27 points and allows 10.3 points a game. Hoover coach Wade Waldrop (112-79, 18 years) coached at Chelsea (41-34, 7 years), James Clemens (54-35, 8 years) and one year at Florence (5-6) before taking over at Hoover (12-4) last season. Vestavia Hills’ Robert Evans (9-6, 2 years) is in his second season as a head coach, both with the Rebels, his alma mater.

HOOVER players to watch: Offense — WR Jordan Woolen (offers from UAB, Austin Peay, more), 4-star WR/ATH Jonah Winston (offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida, more), TE Chris Warren, OL Rashad Smith. Defense — 4-star LB Bradley Shaw (offers from Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, more), 3-star S Jeremy Cook (offers from Arkansas, Southern Miss, more), CB Jamar Moultrie, DL Pa Drammeh, DL Mike Nixon.

VESTAVIA HILLS players to watch: Offense — QB John Paul Head (UAB baseball commit), RB William Tonsmeire, WR Keown Richardson, TE Bruce Littleton, OL JD Livingston. Defense — LB Jacob Watson, LB Gibson Bean, S Spence Hanna, 5-star DE Jordan Ross (Tennessee commit).

2023 HS Football - Clay-Chalkville at Pell City

PINSON VALLEY (1-1) AT CLAY-CHALKVILLE (3-0)

Time/location: Friday, 7 p.m., Cougar Stadium, Clay

Last week: Pinson Valley was idle after losing to McAdory 28-17 the previous week while Clay-Chalkville beat Pell City 47-7.

The skinny: Clay-Chalkville leads the series 12-7, including winning 14-12 in 2022. The Cougars have won two straight after Pinson Valley won the previous seven. Class 6A, Region 6 teams Pinson Valley is unranked while Clay-Chalkville is No. 2. Pinson Valley averages 17.5 points a game and gives up 15.5 while Clay-Chalkville scores 31.3 points and allows only 3.3 points a game, no team scoring more than a touchdown against the stout Cougars defense. Pinson Valley coach Gentrell Eatman (16-44, 7 years) is in his first season with the Indians after stops at Woodlawn (7-23, 3 years) and Greene County (8-20, 3 years). Clay-Chalkville’s Drew Gilmer (70-12, 7 years) — he’s the nephew of former Alabama great Harry Gilmer — has his first head coaching position with the Cougars, leading the team to the playoffs each of the previous six seasons and winning the 2021 state championship.

PINSON VALLEY players to watch: Offense — WR Keywon Posey, WR Rico Freeman, OL Taft Price, RB Josh Woods. Defense — DB Kaden Edwards, DB Jacarlos Hunter, LB Cam Benefield, LB Jamaricus Thomas, DL Reco English.

CLAY-CHALKVILLE players to watch: 5-star QB/ATH Jaylen Mbakwe (Alabama commit), 4-star WR Mario Craver (offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida, more), RB Aaron Osley, RB Taurus Chambers, 4-star OL Jac’Qawn McRoy (Oregon commit), OL AJ Willaims (offers from Marshall, Austin Peay, more), OL Adrian Spivey. Defense — 4-star LB DJ Barber (Auburn commit), LB Rod Ivy, DE Avion Pickett, S Deion Gunn (Marshall offer).

PLEASANT GROVE (2-0) AT RAMSAY (2-1)

Time/location: Friday, 7 p.m., Legion Field, Birmingham

Last week: Pleasant Grove beat Wenonah 35-21 and Ramsay downed Jasper 65-6.

The skinny: Ramsay leads the series 7-4, including handing the Spartans their only two losses last season, 21-14 in the regular season and 27-20 in playoff semifinals. It’s a matchup between Class 5A, Region 5 opponents ASWA top-ranked Pleasant Grove and second-ranked Ramsay. Pleasant Grove averages 44.5 points a game and gives up 17.5 while Ramsay scores 36.7 and allows 13.3 points a game. Pleasant Grove coach Darrell LeBeaux (58-12, 6 years) has guided the Spartans to the playoffs all five previous seasons with championship game appearances 2019, 2020 and 2021. Ramsay’s Ronnie Jackson (21-8, 3 years) led the Rams to last season’s Class 5A title along with a second round appearance in 2021.

PLEASANT GROVE players to watch: Offense — 3-star QB Eric Handley (Wofford commit), 3-star ATH/WR Clarence Taylor (offers from Memphis, Georgia Tech, more), RB Collin Moore, WR Arron Tift, OL Jordan Foy.
