5 Birmingham area football games to watch in AHSAA playoff Week 1

Here are five games to watch in the Birmingham area this week as the first round of AHSAA playoffs begin and AISA plays semifinal action.

Region No. 1 seeded teams host a designated Region No. 4 team in AHSAA playoffs while No. 2 in each region hosts No. 3.

AHSAA CLASS 5A PLAYOFFS

REGION 8 NO. 4 WEST POINT (5-5) AT REGION 5 NO. 1 RAMSAY (8-2)

Time/location: Thursday, 7 p.m., Legion Field

Last week: Both West Point and Ramsay were idle.

The skinny: It’s the first meeting between the teams. West Point was unranked last week while Ramsay was No. 2. West Point averages 22.6 points a game and allows 29 while Ramsay scores 37.3 and surrenders 11.1 points.

Winner plays: Arab at Leeds winner

Coaches: Don Farley (54-61, 11th season) took the West Point job in 2013, his first head coaching position, and has the Warriors in the playoffs for the sixth time, losing in the first round all five previous games. Ronnie Jackson (27-9, 3rd season) has his first head coaching position, taking over at Ramsay in 2021 with playoff appearances each season, leading the Rams to the 2022 Class 5A championship and second round of playoffs in 2021.

WEST POINT players to watch: Offense — RB Garit Roberson, WR Parker Marks, WR Brayden Monfort, RB Ollie Howell. QB Hunter Hensley. Defense — LB JD Cochran, DL Jayden Philyaw, CB Chance Aldridge, CB Eli Sims, SS Jacob Bencze.

RAMSAY players to watch: Offense – 3-star QB Kameron Keenan (offers from Colorado, Marshall, Appalachian State), RB Ashton Ashford (UNA commit), WR Tremell Washington, WR Kristian Stinson, OL Lance Williams. Defense — 3-star LB QB Reese (Alabama commit), LB Marquel Patterson, DL Demarcus Wynn, DB Fletcher Taylor (Marshall offer), SS O’Conner Jones (Marshall offer).

AHSAA CLASS 5A PLAYOFFS

REGION 7 NO. 3 ARAB (7-2) AT REGION 6 NO. 2 LEEDS (8-2)

Time/location: Friday, 7 p.m., Homer Smiles Field

Last week: Arab was idle while Leeds beat Center Point 22-0.

The skinny: It’s the first meeting between the teams. Arab was unranked and Leeds was No. 5 last week. Arab scores 27.5 points a game and gives up 18.6 while Leeds averages 30 points a game and allows 14.7

Winner plays: West Point at Ramsay winner

Coaches: Lee Ozmint (115-54, 15th season) has been at Arab (38-17, 5th year) since 2019 and has the Knights in the playoffs for the fourth straight season, making it to the third round in 2022. He also coached at Glencoe (77-37, 10 years) from 2006-2015 with seven playoff appearances, including winning to the semifinals in 2014. Jerry Hood (143-68, 18th season) took over at Leeds (40-16, 5th year) in 2019 and the Green Wave has its fourth straight playoff appearance, winning to the third round last season after previous head coaching stops at Clay-Chalkville (75-26, 8 years), where he led the Cougars to the Class 6A 2014 championship and the title game in 2015, and Oak Mountain (28-26, 5 years).

ARAB players to watch: Offense — QB Drew Puccio (86-153, 995 yards, 8 TDs, 5 INT passing; 90-497 yards, 6 TDs rushing), RB Logan Alldredge (195-161 yards, 11 TDs rushing), WR Landon Strickland (29-399 yards, 2 TDs), C Noah Smith. Defense —LB Logan Silva (92 tackles, 2 sacks, 8 TFL, 1 INT, 3 QB hurries, 6 QB pressures), DB Hagan Stewart (51 tackles, TFL, FF, FR, 2 INT, 11 PBU), DB Dylan Morrow (33 tackles, 3 TFL, INT, 11 PBU), DL Lawson King (47 tackles, 7 sacks, 15 TFL, FF, FR, 17 QB hurries).

LEEDS players to watch: Offense — QB Conner Nelson, ATH Taylon Gaiter, RB ZJ Dale, RB Grayson Ford, 3-star OT Gavin Bowlin (Georgia Tech, Louisville, Kentucky, UAB, more), OL Carlos Plascencia. AHSAA CLASS 7A PLAYOFFS

REGION 4 NO. 3 BOB JONES (5-5) AT REGION 3 NO. 2 HEWITT-TRUSSVILLE (7-3)

Time/location: Friday, 7 p.m., Hewitt-Trussville Stadium

Last week: Bob Jones lost to Hartselle 35-21 and Hewitt-Trussville was idle.

The skinny: Hewitt-Trussville leads the series 5-2, including a 42-20 win in the first round of 2021 playoffs. Bob Jones was unranked last week and Vestavia Hills is No. 6. Bob Jones scores 28.6 points a game and allows 29.6 while Hewitt-Trussville averages 38.7 and surrenders 23.3.

Winner plays: Hoover at James Clemens winner

Coaches: Kelvis White (82-89, 16th season) took over Bob Jones (18-24, 4th year), guiding the Patriots to their third straight playoff appearance. He also coached at Mae Jemison (25-20, 4 years) with four playoff appearances and Dothan (39-45, 8 years) with four years in the playoffs.

Josh Floyd (179-63-1, 20th season) took over at Hewitt-Trussville (80-34, 10th year) in 2014 and has appeared in the playoffs nine times, reaching the second round six of those. Floyd moved from Arkansas where he coached at Shiloh Christian (99-29, 10 years), leading the Saints to four state championships and another trip to the title game.

BOB JONES players to watch: Offense — RB Tyren Washington, ATH/WR Malachi Foster, OL Tafari Alcime, OL Christian Abrams, WR Colt Dixon. Defense — 3-star DL Myles Cook (UAB commit), DL/OLB Brandon White (offers from Southern Illinois, Alcorn State), NG Kam Suggs, CB AJ Mitchell, LB Romeo Washington.

Last week: Scottsboro beat Decatur 35-20 and Moody was idle.

The skinny: It’s the first meeting between the teams. Moody was ranked No. 6 last week and Scottsboro was No. 12. Moody scores 33.1 points a game and allows 13.3 while Scottsboro averages 41.3 points and surrenders 36.4 points a game.

Winner plays: Fairfield at Russellville winner

Coaches: Jake Ganus (18-4, 2nd season) earned his first head coaching job at Moody in 2022 where the Blue Devils have their second straight playoff appearance. Cris Bell (65-63, 12th season) took the job at Scottsboro (18-14, 3rd year) in 2021 and reached the playoffs for the second straight season, falling in the second round last year. He also coached at Oak Mountain (47-49, 9 years) with four playoff appearances.

MOODY players to watch: Offense — 3-star RB Blaine Burke (Arkansas State commit), 3-star QB Charlie Johnston (offers from Pittsburgh, Louisiana Tech, Miami-Ohio, Toledo), WR KD Barnes, WR Braden Wright, WR Aidan Robinson, OL Brennan King, OL Jaxon Huckeba. REGION 3 NO. 3 VESTAVIA HILLS (8-2) AT REGION 4 NO. 2 AUSTIN (8-2)

Time/location: Friday, 7 p.m., Austin Football Field

Last week: Vestavia Hills beat Helena 44-0 and Austin was idle.

The skinny: Vestavia Hills has won all five games in the series, including 52-10 in last year’s first round. Austin was ranked No. 10 last week and Vestavia Hills was No. 6. Austin scores 36 points a game and allows 14.2 while Vestavia Hills averages 34.4 and surrenders 12.2.

Winner plays: Florence at Thompson winner

Coaches: Robert Evans (15-7, 2nd season) played under Vestavia Hills legendary coach Buddy Anderson and has taken the team to the playoffs both seasons, winning to the second round last year. Jeremy Perkins (98-59, 14th season) earned his first head coaching position at Austin in 2010, after serving as Hoover’s defensive coordinator. He’s the school’s all-time wins leader and is taking the Black Bears to their 10th playoff appearance under his tutelage.

VESTAVIA HILLS players to watch: Offense —QB John Paul Head (UAB baseball commit), RB William Tonsmeire, RB Caden Taylor, WR Keown Richardson, WR Chase Webb, WR Cooper Mollison, OL JD Livingston, OL Ford Brown, K Owen Simpson.
