5 Birmingham-area AHSAA playoff games to watch in Week 1
Here are five games to watch in the Birmingham area for Week 1 of the Alabama High School Athletic Association football playoffs. The complete schedule follows.
CLASS 7A: HEWITT-TRUSSVILLE (7-3) AT FLORENCE (8-2)
Time/location: Friday, 7 p.m., Braly Municipal Stadium, Florence
Last week: No. 5 Hewitt-Trussville had an open date after beating Chelsea 45-14 on Oct. 21; No. 7 Florence also was off last week and beat Sparkman 21-0 on Oct. 21
The skinny: Region 3 No. 3 seed Hewitt-Trussville’s region losses were to No. 1 Hoover and No. 2 Thompson. The skinny: Region 3 No. 4 seed Vestavia Hills lost to Thompson, Hoover and Hewitt-Trussville in region play – the top three finishers. … The Rebels also lost to Mountain Brook in the season-opener, but have won three straight. … Vestavia Hills has a 4-0 record vs. Austin, the past two coming in first-round playoff games, but the teams haven’t played since 2011. … Robert Evans, a Vestavia alumnus, is in his first season as a head coach. He came home after serving as offensive coordinator at Mountain Brook. … Vestavia Hills scored 34.7 points a games and gave up 20.3. … QB John Paul Head completed 15-of-22 passes for 199 yards and a score last week, giving him 1,461 passing yards and 14 TDs this season. … Head ran for 132 yards and 3 TDs vs. Helena to push his season total to 983 yards with 19 scores. … Keown Richardson has 35 receptions for 414 yards and 5 TDs. … John Martin Richter has 37 tackles from his linebacker spot. … Houston Owen had 11 solo stops last week. … Grant Downey leads the team with 6 interceptions. … Region 4 No. 1 seed Austin won seven straight before falling in its final regular-season game to Region 4 foe Huntsville. The skinny: Region 3 No. 4 seed Calera lost to the top three seeds in the region, Homewood, Pelham and Benjamin Russell. … The Eagles also lost to 7A Spain Park and 6A teams Gadsden City and McAdory. … This is the first meeting between Calera and Hillcrest. … Jason Hamlin is 11-10 in his second season as head coach at Calera. … The Eagles scored 22.8 points per game while giving up 26.9. Calera won two multi-overtime games (31-28 over Briarwood in 2OT, 52-51 over Helena in 4OT).
