49ers, Ravens set for a ‘dadgum ballgame’ on Christmas

The holiday has the NFL’s Week 16 schedule spread across four days, with one game on Thursday, two games on Saturday, 10 games on Sunday and three games on Monday. The final game of the week will be a rare one, and not because it’s being played on Christmas night.

When the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers square off at 7:15 p.m. CST Monday, the game will be the second in the NFL’s AFC/NFC era to match teams sharing the league’s best record in Week 16 or later of a regular season.

The Ravens and 49ers have 11-3 records, the best in the AFC and the NFC, respectively.

“It’ll be a good one,” Baltimore cornerback Marlon Humphrey said during his “Punch Line” podcast this week. “I think this might be the game of the year, honestly. It could definitely be the game of the year. …

“It’s going to be a ballgame. It’s going to be a dadgum ballgame.”

The only other game since 1970 that involved teams that shared the NFL’s best record this late in the season occurred on Jan. 2, 1994, when the Dallas Cowboys defeated the New York Giants 16-13 in overtime. The Cowboys went on to defeat the Buffalo Bills 30-13 in Super Bowl XXVIII.

Dallas and New York couldn’t have a Super Bowl rematch because they were in the same conference. But Baltimore and San Francisco could play again on Feb. 11 in Las Vegas in Super Bowl LVIII.

“We just have to take it one game at a time,” Humphrey told reporters in the Baltimore locker room on Wednesday. “If this could be a (preview) of the Super Bowl, I’d love it. That means we’ve taken care of business and got there.”

Baltimore has yielded the fewest points in the NFL this season, and San Francisco ranks second in scoring defense. The 49ers and Ravens rank third and fourth, respectively, in points scored in the NFL in 2023. The oddsmakers have San Francisco as a 5.5-point favorite.

“I usually don’t really see what we are, but I did see this one,” Humphrey said. “I think we’re a touchdown (underdog). I was a little surprised at that. That hurt my feelings a little bit. I was surprised to see that, but I definitely want to make that be incorrect, for sure. Hopefully, some people lose some money betting with them and make some money betting with us. That’d be great.”

Injuries have kept Humphrey out of six games this season. The former Hoover High School and Alabama standout has played every defensive snap in the Ravens’ past two games and figures he’ll need to be in his Pro Bowl form against San Francisco.

“I’m excited for this one,” Humphrey said. “Their defense is crazy, so you know our offense, I’m not going to say they’re going to struggle, but they’re going to have put some work in to score points. The defense’s got to come ready, but they just got key playmakers. Christian McCaffrey scores every single, freaking game. Deebo (Samuel), (Brandon) Aiyuk, (George) Kittle – dang.”

It’s not a stretch to think the game could help determine the winner of the NFL’s MVP Award for the 2023 season, with the quarterbacks – Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson and San Francisco’s Brock Purdy – considered among the contenders.

The Ravens have a 19-1 record against NFC teams with Jackson as their starting quarterback.

“With Lamar, it’s unique just because I think everyone has a pretty good plan,” Humphrey said, “and then it just seems like it doesn’t go as planned based off what I see. He’s just a guy that he does it all. You see it every week. It gets normal to the guys like us, but it’s always — anytime I put on the TV copy, it’s like, ‘This guy is crazy good.’ It’s really cool to see the things he does in a game. Even in practice, it formulates to the game.”
