49ers rally past Lions to reach Super Bowl LVIII

The San Francisco 49ers overcame a 17-point halftime deficit against the Detroit Lions on Sunday to reach Super Bowl LVIII.

The 49ers will play the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII on Feb. 11 after defeating Detroit 34-31 in the NFC Championship Game.

The 49ers scored on all five of their full second-half possessions to total 27 points after halftime.

San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy completed 13-of-16 passes for 174 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions and ran four times for 49 yards in the second half. In the first half, he had completed 7-of-15 passes for 93 yards with no touchdowns and one interception and one rushing attempt for minus-1 yard.

Purdy got 51 of his passing yards on a throw that hit Detroit cornerback Kindle Vildor in the face mask, with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk grabbing the bouncing football in the air and coming down at the Detroit 4-yard line to set up a touchdown with 5:17 left in the third quarter.

The San Francisco defense made two fourth-down stops in the second half to aid the 49ers’ comeback. Incomplete passes on fourth-and-2 at the San Francisco 28-yard line on Detroit’s first third-quarter possession and fourth-and-3 at 49ers 30 with 7:32 to play stopped Lions’ drives.

Detroit held a 24-7 halftime advantage after two Alabama alumni scored touchdowns for the Lions.

Jameson Williams ran 42 yards on an end-around for the first points of the game with 13:18 left in the first quarter, and running back Jahmyr Gibbs had a 15-yard touchdown run as the Lions took a 21-7 lead with 5:54 remaining in the first half.

Gibbs also had a 10-yard touchdown run against the Los Angeles Rams and a 31-yard touchdown run against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in victories that advanced Detroit to the NFC Championship Game.

Gibbs became the fourth Alabama player to score three touchdowns in a single preseason. Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts scored five touchdowns in the playoffs for the 2022 season. Seattle Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander scored three touchdowns (in one game) in the playoffs for the 2003 season. Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones scored three touchdowns in the playoffs for the 2016 season.

Gibbs ran for 45 yards and one touchdown on 12 carries and caught three passes for 11 yards against San Francisco. The rookie also lost a fumble at the Lions 24-yard line that set up the touchdown that allowed the 49ers to tie the game at 24-24 with 3:02 left in the third quarter.

In addition to his touchdown run, Williams had two receptions for 25 yards and one touchdown. Williams made a leaping catch in the back of the end zone with 56 seconds to play for a 3-yard TD reception that cut San Francisco’s lead to three points. The 49ers recovered an onside kick to secure the victory.

Williams’ 22-yard reception went off his hands into the hands of San Francisco cornerback Ambry Thomas before Williams reclaimed the football.

Williams entered the contest with four touchdowns in 18 regular-season and two playoff games.

In addition to Gibbs and Williams, two other players from Alabama high schools and colleges got on the field during the Detroit-San Francisco game:

· Lions defensive back Brian Branch (Alabama) made four tackles and recorded one tackle for loss in the final game of his rookie season.

· Forty-Niners tight end Cameron Latu (Alabama) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Forty-Niners cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. (South Alabama) did not record any stats.

· Lions defensive tackle Brodric Martin (Northridge, North Alabama) was designated as a game-day inactive.

Detroit won the NFC North with a 12-5 record during the regular season, then defeated the Rams 24-23 on Jan. 14 and the Buccaneers 31-23 on Jan. 21 to reach the NFC Championship Game.

San Francisco won the NFC West with a 12-5 record during the regular season, then defeated the Green Bay Packers 24-21 on Jan. 20 to reach the NFC Championship Game.

The 49ers and Chiefs will square off in Super Bowl LVIII at 5:30 p.m. CST Feb. 11 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. CBS will televise the NFL championship game for the 2023 season.

San Francisco has played in the Super Bowl seven times. The 49ers defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 26-21 in Super Bowl XVI on Jan. 24, 1982, the Miami Dolphins 38-16 in Super Bowl XIX on Jan. 20, 1985, the Bengals 20-16 in Super Bowl XXIII on Jan. 22, 1989, the Denver Broncos 55-10 in Super Bowl XXIV on Jan. 28, 1990, and the San Diego Chargers 49-26 in Super Bowl on Jan. 29, 1995, and lost to the Baltimore Ravens 34-31 in Super Bowl XLVII on Feb. 3, 2013, and the Chiefs 31-20 in Super Bowl LIV on Feb. 2, 2020.
