A Walker County man is behind bars, accused in the shooting of another man in the Sipsey community.

Deangelo Marcellous Smith, 45, is charged with attempted murder. He is being held in the Walker County Jail.

Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched about 10 a.m. Tuesday to Fifth Avenue West in Sipsey on a report of a shooting. They arrived to the find the wounded victim in the street.

The victim was airlifted to UAB Hospital in Birmingham.

Witnesses told authorities the suspect – now identified as Smith – fled on foot.

While investigators began to process the crime scene, deputies and narcotics agents launched a search for Smith. Jefferson County’s Star 1 helicopter and tracking dogs assisted in the search.

Smith was found in a wooded area near the crime scene. He was taken to a hospital to be checked out and then booked into the county jail.

The attempted murder warrant was obtained Wednesday morning.

He appeared in court and bond was set at $60,000.
