45-year-old inmate dies at Madison County Jail

An investigation is underway after a 45-year-old man was found dead in his cell at the Madison County Jail.

Coryell Derrick suffered a “sudden medical emergency” which proved fatal around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. Medical personnel responded to the jail but were unable to revive Derrick. There are no indications of foul play or suspicious circumstances.

“An in-custody death is always difficult for everyone involved: facility staff members, medical staff, and emergency first responders. We are extremely saddened to report the death of Mr. Derrick and send our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time,” Sheriff Kevin Turner said.

Derrick was booked into Madison County Jail in July to face probation violation charges and traffic offenses.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death and family members have been notified.
