44-year-old Bessemer man found slain inside burning vehicle in southwest Birmingham
A 44-year-old man was found dead overnight inside a burning vehicle in southwest Birmingham.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Calvin Dewayne Ball. He lived in Bessemer.
West Precinct officers were dispatched at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday to a report of a person down in the 4300 block of Eli Avenue.
When they arrived, said Officer Derell Freeman, they were met by Birmingham firefighters who told them they found the man unresponsive inside the vehicle once they extinguished the flames.
Yates said Ball was pronounced dead at 11:53 p.m.
Freeman said details surrounding the case are limited, but said the death is being investigated as a homicide.
Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said an autopsy will be performed today to determine how the victim was killed.
Ball is Birmingham’s 31st homicide this year. In all of Jefferson County, there have been 46 homicides including the 31 in Birmingham.
