43-year-old ID’d as man killed in shooting at southwest Birmingham home
Authorities have released the name of a man killed in a Wednesday shooting in southwest Birmingham.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office on Friday identified the victim as James Darnell Levert. He was 43.
West Precinct officers were dispatched just after 9:30 p.m. to a report of a person shot in the 1400 block of Fulton Avenue S.W.
Police arrived to find Levert unresponsive inside a home. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced the victim dead on the scene at 9:51 p.m.
Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said the resident of the home told police he heard shots fired outside and went to investigate. When he opened his door, the victim fell into his home.
The resident then called 911.
Wade said it wasn’t immediately clear if the homeowner knew the victim.
No arrests have been announced.
Levert is the city’s 24th homicide this year. In all of Jefferson County, there have been 37 homicides including the 24 in Birmingham.
