41st annual Juanita Boddie Tournament highlights AHSAA volleyball opening weekend

AHSAA high school volleyball opened on Thursday and the first weekend of play features plenty of tournament action, including the 41st annual Juanita Boddie

Some of the best big-school teams in the state compete at the Boddie, this year at multiple sites instead of Hoover’s Finley Center because of a scheduling conflict.

Other tournaments include the Amelia Rhoades Set-off Tournament, CaroStrong Invitational, Wildcat Serve-Off, Smith Lake Classic, Lauderdale County Serve-Off, Liberty Bank Invitational, Panthers Classic, Falcon Frenzy, Good Hope Invitational, Brewer Bash and Thomasville Invitational.

Juanita Boddie Tournament

Action in the Boddie features 50 teams seeded in 10 five-team pools for two days of play. The tournament will be played on several courts at Hoover High School along with Simmons Middle School, beginning on Friday at 4:30 p.m. with the final match of the night scheduled for 8:30.

Pool play resumes on Saturday at 8 a.m. with teams seeded for a single elimination tournament starting at 1 p.m. The championship match is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Eight of the AL.com Class 7A top 10 volleyball teams will compete while six Class 6A ranked teams will be there.

Ranked Class 7A teams include No. 1 McGill-Toolen, No. 2 Bob Jones, No. 3 Enterprise, No. 4 and host Hoover, No. 5 Chelsea, No. 6 Spain Park, No. 8 Vestavia Hills and No. 10 Oak Mountain.

Other notable teams in the field include Class 6A No. 1 Bayside Academy, No. 2 Spanish Fort, No. 3 Mountain Brook, No. 5 Pelham No. 6 Homewood and No. 7 Hartselle along with Class 5A top-ranked Arab.

Kinston hosts the 39th edition of the annual tournament with pool play on two courts beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday with an elimination tournament following.

CaroStrong

The annual invitational round-robin at Jacksonville High School on Saturday benefits the Leukemia Foundation in honor of former Eagles player Caroline Neisler.

Court 1 — 9 a.m.: Alexandria vs. Ohatchee, 10: Jacksonville vs. Weaver, 11: Jacksonville vs. Alexandria, noon: Sylacauga vs. Alexandria, 1 p.m.: Jacksonville vs. Walter Wellborn, 2: Jacksonville vs. Ohatchee

Central-Florence hosts 12 teams beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday with Gold and Silver tournaments following at 3 p.m.

Curry hosts the 20-team tournament with pool play beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday with eliminations following at 3:45 p.m.

Notable teams include Class 2A top-ranked Donoho and Class 1A top-ranked Addison.

The eight-team tournament begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday with the final pool play match at 2 p.m. Eliminations begin at 3 with the title match at 4.

Liberty Bank Invitational

Geraldine hosts 12 teams beginning with pool play at 9 a.m. on Saturday with elimination brackets following the final round of pool play at 2 p.m.

Pool B: Guntersville, Danville, Ider, Ashville

Panthers Classic

The tournament at Prattville Christian begins with pool play at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday with eliminations following.

Falcon Frenzy

Play at the Central-Tuscaloosa tournament begins at 8 a.m. Saturday with the final pool play match scheduled for 1 p.m.

Pool B: Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa, Northside, Fairfield, Lamar County

Good Hope Invitational

Pool play starts Saturday at 9 a.m. at Good Hop High School with eliminations to follow the final pool play match at 2 p.m.

Pool B: Randolph, Brooks, Madison County, Coosa Christian

Brewer Bash

Six teams start pool play at 9 a.m. on Saturday followed by an elimination bracket.

Pool A: Columbia, Decatur Heritage, Brewer

Pool B: Athens Bible, DAR, Madison Academy

Thomasville Invitational

The double elimination tournament starts at 10 a.m. with Washington County playing Sweet Water followed at 11 by Thomasville vs. Leroy and University Charter taking on the first match winner.

The championship is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.

River City Classic (Bartlett, Tenn.)

Three state teams will compete in the 27th annual tournament with teams from Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas.

Thompson, Hazel Green and Sparkman will play with action starting at 4 p.m. on Friday and continuing at 8 a.m. on Saturday. Elimination bracket play begins at 1:30 p.m.
