41-year-old man convicted in cousin’s slaying at west Birmingham home

A 41-year-old man has been found guilty in the Birmingham shooting death of his cousin.

A Jefferson County jury on Friday convicted Clinton Ruffin of provocation manslaughter in the Dec. 22, 2022, slaying of 37-year-old Orlando Ruffin.

Clinton Ruffin was initially charged with murder, but the jury convicted him on a lesser charge after a five-day trial that began Monday.

West Precinct officers responded to the home in the 2200 block of Beulah Avenue on that Thursday after receiving a 911 call of a dispute. A few minutes later, a second call was made to 911 stating that a man had been shot.

Officers arrived to find Orlando Ruffin suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10 p.m.

Clinton Ruffin was taken into custody at the scene.

Following the conviction, Jefferson County Circuit Judge Kechia Davis revoked the defendant’s bond and ordered him to surrender to the county jail on Monday, June 17.

Clinton Ruffin’s sentencing is set for Aug. 12.

Jefferson County Deputy District Attorneys Lauren Breland and Jaleel Washington prosecuted the case. Clinton Ruffin was represented by attorney Hiram Griffin.
