4-year-old killed, 4 others injured in south Alabama crash

A 4-year-old was killed and four other people injured in weekend crash in Covington County.

The two-vehicle wreck happened at 5:22 p.m. Sunday on Alabama 55, about seven miles north of Red Level city limits.

ALEA Senior Trooper Kendra McKinney said the Chevrolet Equinox, in which the juvenile was a passenger, struck a Chevrolet Silverado driven by an 18-year-old.

The 4-year-old was airlifted to the hospital where he or she was pronounced dead.

Troopers do not release the names of juvenile victims.

The 18-year-old was not using a seat belt at the time of the crash, was injured and also taken to a hospital for treatment.

The driver of the Equinox, 34-year-old Catherine Grace Nixon, of Andalusia, was injured and airlifted to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola.

Two other children in the Equinox, ages 4 and 5, were also hospitalized.

The investigation is ongoing.
