A woman and a 4-year-old girl were shot tonight in Birmingham’s Collegeville neighborhood, according to police.

Both victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident happened in the 3000 block of 29th Avenue North around 8 p.m.

North Precinct officers and officers with Birmingham police’s housing division were dispatched to the area on a call of a person shot, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.

At the scene, officers found the woman and the girl in a front yard suffering from gunshot wounds.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service personnel took the woman to UAB Hospital while the girl was taken to Children’s Hospital.

“We are happy to report that both have non-life-threatening injuries,” said Fitzgerald.

The preliminary investigation revealed a group of people pulled up in a vehicle and intentionally shot into an apartment occupied by the woman and the girl, the officer said.

Multiple shell casings were found on the ground, and the evidence suggested the apartment was targeted by the gunfire.

No suspects were in custody as of 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Fitzgerald was visibly upset that an innocent child was harmed, and urged residents to “adopt a law enforcement mindset” and “stop babysitting this type of mentality” of reckless shootings.

“We have a popular idea in our culture that if we have an issue with someone we’re ust going to pull up into a house … and fire recklessly into an apartment,” he said. “I’ve got news for you: you never hit your intended target. But I’ll tell you who you do end up hitting. You end up hitting 2-year-old Major Turner. You end up hitting 12-year-old Audrianna Pearson. And tonight we’re on the scene yet again where an innocent child has bene struck by gunfire who had nothing to do with this scenario.

“So my challenge to everyone in Birmingham is we need to stop babysitting this type of mentality and we all need to take it upon ourselves to adopt a law enforcement mindset,” Fitzgerald continued. “Who in their right mind is bold enough to come into Collegeville with all these kids … and you fire this many rounds into an apartment. And we are blessed that we have not had a child killed tonight and this child will survive.”
