An investigation is underway after a 4-year-old girl sustained a gunshot wound Wednesday in Fultondale.

Police and fire medics were dispatched shortly after 12:30 p.m. to Chapel Creek Apartments on a report of a child shot.

Police Chief Marcel Walker said when officers arrived, the little girl’s mother was applying pressure to the child’s leg wound. The bullet had gone in and out of the girl’s leg.

The child was taken to Children’s of Alabama. Walker said her injuries aren’t life-threatening.

The mother told police the girl was in a room and accidentally shot herself.

Three people were at the home when police arrived. A fourth had left before officers got on the scene.

Walker said the investigation is ongoing.
