4 things to expect on Day 4 of SEC Media Days 2023
We’re coming to the end of the line at SEC Media Days 2023.
Thursday is the last of four days at the Grand Hyatt in Nashville, and we will hear from the final three SEC schools on the docket. Tennessee, Ole Miss and South Carolina will wind things up Thursday morning before everyone tries to get out of town in the afternoon.
Here’s what to expect on Day 4 of SEC Media Days:
1. Tennessee’s NCAA case will overshadow everything
Josh Heupel and the current players weren’t involved in the NCAA sanctions the Volunteers were hit with on Friday, but the fallout will continue to be part of the team’s storyline in 2023. Heupel will certainly be asked how he navigated the fallout from the firing of Jeremy Pruitt and the defection of 40-plus players and still won 11 games in Year 2, probably more so than about building on that momentum.
2. Lots of talk about Joe Milton’s arm strength
Milton’s cannon of a right arm has become a storyline unto itself over the offseason, and he certainly can “spin it,” as the kids say. However, he wasn’t good enough to hold off Hendon Hooker for the starting job two years ago, so it’s fair to wonder how much of a downgrade he will be for the Volunteers at the quarterback position this season. Hooker’s 2023 season is a difficult standard to live up to, but that hasn’t stopped the Milton hype.
3. Lane Kiffin won’t be as outrageous as his reputation might dictate
Kiffin has a rather mischievous sense of humor, but it more often shows itself on social media than it does at the podium. The days of him openly taking shots at his coaching colleagues also seem to have subsided as he’s gotten older. Kiffin should have a pretty good team in Oxford this year, and it’s fair to wonder if this is finally the year that the Rebels become a real threat to Alabama and LSU in the SEC West.
4. Wait, South Carolina brought its punter?
I’d have to do the research, but it’s possible Kai Kroger is the first punter to represent his team at SEC Media Days. Kickers and punters often make for interesting interview subjects, but they’re not often relied upon for the kind of nuts-and-bolts insight reporters are seeking at SEC Media Days because they aren’t in offensive or defensive meetings and are often working off to the side during practice. Kroger’s one of the best in the country at his position, though.
