3rd person dies following crash that happened as driver fled police in east Alabama
A third person has died following a head-on crash that happened while authorities said the suspect was fleeing law enforcement.
The wreck happened at 9:46 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, on U.S. 29 in Valley, which is in Chambers County.
Initially killed were Aron C. Haynes, 98, of Valley, and an 18-year-old whose name authorities have not released because of his age. The teen was a passenger in the suspect’s vehicle.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency on Friday said the third victim, 64-year-old Regina G. Rutledge, of Lanett, died Thursday, Jan. 4, one week after the crash. She was pronounced dead at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta
Westley T. McKinnon, of Troy, is currently charged with two counts of reckless murder. More charges are expected following Rutledge’s death.
McKinnon underwent a bond hearing remains held without bond in the Chambers County Jail.
Trooper Sgt. Jeremy Burkett said that before the crash occurred, McKinnon was trying to elude law enforcement. Burkett did not say which law enforcement agency was trying to stop McKinnon or why.
Authorities said Rutledge was the driver of a Nissan Altima that collided head-on with the Kia Forte driven by the 20-year-old McKinnon.
Haynes was taken to East Alabama Medical Center-Lanier where he was pronounced dead that day. Rutledge was taken to Piedmont Hospital in Columbus and then transferred to Grady Memorial Hospital where she died one week later.
The 18-year-old passenger in McKinnon’s Altima was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead a short time after the crash.
McKinnon was hospitalized overnight and then taken into custody.
