39-year-old identified as man gunned down while riding bicycle on Birmingham street
Authorities have released the name of a man fatally shot while he was riding his bicycle in Birmingham.
Police and the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Derek Jason Wright. He was 39 and lived in Forestdale.
Shortly after 4:30 p.m. Thursday, West Precinct officers responded to the 400 block of 4th Street Thomas on a call of a person shot, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.
Officers arrived on the scene to find Wright unresponsive in the front yard of a home suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service personnel pronounced him dead on the scene 4:56 p.m.
“Our victim was just riding down the street on a bicycle and a group of males pulled up on him,’’ Fitzgerald said.
A shooter got out of the vehicle and opened fire on the victim. The gunman then got back into the vehicle and drove away.
No arrests have been announced.
Wright is the city’s 35th homicide in 2023. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside agency and three others have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.
In all of Jefferson County, there have been 47 homicides including the 35 in Birmingham.
